Translate the Meaning, or Convert the Sound

Ask yourself one question: are the words you typed English words, or Tamil words spelled in English letters? That decides the mode.

Same Input, Different Results

The two modes answer different questions, so the wrong one gives you something odd. Here is what happens with a few common inputs.

Thank you
Translate: நன்றி, which is what you want.Transliterate: தன்க் யொவு, the English sounds spelled in Tamil letters. Nobody writes that.
nandri
Transliterate: நன்றி. A translator does not know nandri as English, so it returns it unchanged or guesses. Tamil typed in English letters always belongs in Transliterate.
computer
Both are right, for different readers. Translate gives the formal Tamil word கணினி (kanini), used in textbooks and news. Transliterate gives கம்ப்யூட்டர், the English word in Tamil letters, which is what most people say every day.
Madurai, Priya, Murugan Stores
Names have no translation. Use Transliterate: Madurai becomes மதுரை. If the first spelling of a name is wrong, tap it and pick another.

Under the hood

How This Converter Works

No server, no account, no paid API. Everything that can run on your device does.

Translate

Recent versions of Google Chrome on a computer include a translator that runs on the device. The first time you translate English to Tamil, Chrome downloads a language pack and shows the progress here. After that, translations appear as you type, even offline, and your text is not sent to any server.

Phones, Safari and Firefox do not have this translator yet. There, Translate becomes a phrasebook: it looks each sentence up in our list of everyday phrases, checked by hand, and shows the written Tamil, the spoken form and how to say it. A close match always shows the phrase it matched, so you can see when the meaning differs. For anything else, Translate online with Google opens Google's site with your text filled in. That link sends your text to Google, and it is the only part of this page that does.

Transliterate

This is our own engine, the same one behind the Tamil typing editor. It reads English letters as Tamil sounds: zh is ழ, a capital L is ள, double letters are double sounds. It checks each word against a Tamil word list and underlines the ones it is unsure of, so you can tap and fix them.

It works on every phone and computer, and nothing you type leaves your device. English to Tamil typing shows what to type for each letter.

Questions People Ask

What is the difference between translate and transliterate?

Translation changes the language: Thank you becomes நன்றி. Transliteration keeps the words and changes only the alphabet: nandri becomes நன்றி. If you typed English words, translate. If you typed Tamil words in English letters, transliterate. The two tabs serve these separate purposes.

Is this online English to Tamil converter free?

Yes. Both modes are free and require no account. Transliteration runs locally, while translation can use an available on-device translator, the phrasebook or our server after you opt in. The optional server has request and usage limits. Choose the mode for your task before entering a long passage.

Does Translate work on my phone?

The phrasebook and local transliteration are available on phones. If an on-device translator is unavailable, Translate also offers our server after you choose to send text, or a link to Google Translate. Read the label beside the result to see which method supplied it, and check the answer before copying.

Does the converter upload my English text?

Transliteration and the phrasebook run locally. Translation uses an available on-device model, or sends text to our server only after you opt in. Stop sending text turns that server mode off. The optional Google link also sends your text outside this site, so choose a local mode for material you do not want to share.

How accurate is machine translation from English to Tamil?

Good for short, plain sentences, weaker for idioms, slang and long sentences. It usually writes formal Tamil, and it has to guess how polite to be, because English “you” can be நீ or நீங்கள். Read the result before you send it to anyone important. Tips for better results.

Can I convert English to Tamil without internet?

Transliteration works locally once the page and its resources have loaded. The phrasebook also runs locally, but our server and the optional Google link need a connection. On-device translation depends on an available downloaded language model. Try the mode you plan to use while offline before relying on it for a long task.

Which mode should I use for a shop or person’s name?

Start with Transliterate when you want the sound of a name written in Tamil. Translate is for the meaning of English words and can change what the name says. Check the spelling with the person or business before publishing it, and keep the approved version rather than treating a suggested spelling as authoritative.

Can I upload a Word document to this converter?

No. Both modes accept text pasted or typed into their input boxes, not document uploads. Copy a short passage from your document and choose the mode that matches your intent. The result is text to review and copy back; this page does not preserve the original document layout, tables or images.

Why is a phrasebook answer different from my English sentence?

A closest phrase is a related example from the phrasebook, not a translation of every word you entered. Compare the source phrase shown with the answer before copying it. If details differ, shorten or rephrase your input, or choose an available translation option and review that result separately.

Why does server translation reject a long paragraph?

The optional server accepts at most 1,000 characters and 20 lines per request. Split a longer passage into smaller sections and keep enough context in each section to review the result. Rate and daily limits also apply. These server restrictions do not describe the separate local transliteration mode.
