Everyday Tamil · 153 words · 1342 keystrokes on Tamil99 · From typewriters to computers, and why accuracy still matters.

Everyday Tamil · 153 words · 1314 keystrokes on Tamil99 · Lakes, tanks and saving water, then and now.

About these texts

Why These Words, and Where They Come From

The word lists are grouped by what makes Tamil typing hard: first short words with simple vowels, then the doubled consonants (க்க ட்ட ன்ற), then the two-part vowels கொ கோ கை that typewriter and Bamini typists strike sign first, then long verbs and grantha letters.

The everyday paragraphs were written for this site in plain, modern Tamil about home, markets, travel and food. The Hard level uses Thirukkural couplets and songs by Subramania Bharati, both in the public domain; to type all 1,330 kurals, try Thirukkural typing. We do not copy newspaper or exam text.

Every text here is checked by our tests to be typeable on all five layouts (Phonetic, Tamil99, Typewriter, Bamini and InScript), using only commas and full stops for punctuation so no layout is left out. The keystroke counts are worked out by typing each text with the Tamil99 rules.

Questions People Ask

Can I use these Tamil paragraphs for typing practice offline or in class?

Yes. You can copy the original everyday paragraphs and word lists for personal practice or typing classes. Keep a separate copy before going offline, because this page has no offline installation feature. For guided online work, use Practise this to open the selected passage in the typing test.

Which paragraph should I start with?

Start with the Easy word lists, then the Easy paragraphs. Move up a level when you can type a paragraph with at least 95% accuracy. The Hard texts use classical Tamil with many clusters. For exam speed practice, finish with the Long passages: each is 150 words or more.

How do I practise a paragraph?

Press Practise this. The paragraph opens in the Tamil typing test as an untimed passage; choose your layout there. Mistakes are marked as you type and listed at the end. Keep the passage untimed for a first attempt so you can check its spelling before working on speed.

Are these the passages used in the TNDTE typewriting exam?

No. Exam passages are set by the examining body and are not published here. These texts train the same skills: steady speed, accuracy and the hard letter combinations. For practice in the exam format, use the Junior and Senior mock speed papers.

Why do some Thirukkural words look split, like காய்கவர்ந் தற்று?

The couplets are printed with the traditional word breaks of the verse, which do not always match modern word boundaries. Type them exactly as shown; the test compares word for word. Use an everyday paragraph if those classical breaks make the keyboard practice harder to follow.

Can I practise the same paragraph in Bamini and Tamil99?

Yes. Open a passage with Practise this, then select the layout in the typing test. The target remains Unicode Tamil; the selected layout changes how you enter it. This is useful for comparing your control of two keyboards, but it does not create a document encoded in a legacy Bamini font.

What is the difference between the word count and the key count?

The word count counts items separated by whitespace, while the key count uses the Tamil99 key sequence needed for that passage. They measure different work, so a short passage can still involve many key presses. Use word count to choose a manageable reading length and the selected keyboard’s practice result to compare your typing.

Where can I find longer Tamil passages for sustained practice?

Choose the Long section for passages of at least 150 words. Open one in the typing test and complete it untimed before trying a timed run. For a ten-minute examination-style rehearsal, follow the mock paper link instead; the paragraph collection is organised for general practice rather than an official paper length.

Should I copy punctuation and spaces exactly when practising?

Yes. Follow the displayed target, including its punctuation and word breaks, because the trainer compares your input with that text. A remembered version of a poem may use different spacing. If a classical passage is distracting while you learn the keyboard, return to an Easy everyday paragraph and practise the unfamiliar combinations separately.

Can I use just the Tamil word lists for a beginner lesson?

Yes. Start with an Easy word list before opening a full paragraph. Read and type a few words at a time, then repeat the ones that caused hesitation. For guided key-by-key work with saved lesson progress, move to Tamil typing practice; this page supplies the material rather than a sequenced course.
