Short answer
Tamil99 is the Tamil keyboard layout standardised by the Government of Tamil Nadu after the Tamilnet 99 conference in 1999. Vowels sit under the left hand and consonants under the right, and the keyboard joins them: H S gives கி. To start, click the box above and type; your computer can stay on English.
How it types
The Keyboard Joins the Letters for You
Tamil99 has one key for each vowel and one for each consonant (with its inherent அ). You type a letter the way you say it: consonant, then vowel. The keyboard combines them, so there are no separate keys for vowel signs and far fewer keystrokes than on a typewriter.
These are the rules of the Tamil99 standard, and this page follows every one of them. Each result in the table is produced by the same code that runs the keyboard above.
| When you type | Keys | You get | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consonant, then vowel | HS | கி | The vowel joins the consonant as its sign. |
| Consonant, then F | HF | க் | F is the pulli key. It makes a pure consonant. |
| Same consonant twice | KKQ | ம்மா | The first one gets a pulli by itself. |
| Soft, then its hard pair | ;L | ந்த | ங்க ஞ்ச ண்ட ந்த ம்ப ன்ற also get the pulli by themselves. |
| Three in a row | HHH | க்கக | After an automatic pulli, the next key never gets one. |
| Consonant, then A | HAS | கஇ | அ confirms the letter as it is; the next key does not join it. |
| Caret, then a vowel | Shift 6S | ி | Shift 6 (^) first gives the bare vowel sign. |
Where the letters are
Vowels on the Left, Consonants on the Right
Your left hand types the twelve vowels and the pulli; your right hand types the most common consonants. Because almost every Tamil syllable is a consonant followed by a vowel, the hands alternate, which is what makes Tamil99 fast once learned.
- Home row, left: அ இ உ ் எ on A S D F G.
- Home row, right: க ப ம த ந ய on H J K L ; '.
- The long vowels sit right above their short partners: ஆ over அ, ஈ over இ, ஊ over உ.
- Grantha letters and ஃ are on Shift.

Questions People Ask
What is the Tamil99 keyboard?
Tamil99 is the Tamil keyboard layout standardised by the Government of Tamil Nadu after the Tamilnet 99 conference in 1999. Vowels sit under the left hand, consonants under the right, and the keyboard joins letters for you: a consonant followed by a vowel becomes one letter, and a doubled consonant gets its pulli automatically.
Do I need to install Tamil99 to use this page?
No. This page reads which physical key you press, so your computer can stay on English. The text is standard Unicode Tamil that you can copy into Word, Google Docs, Gmail or WhatsApp. To type Tamil99 inside other programs, add a Tamil99 keyboard in your operating system settings or install an input tool such as Keyman.
How do I type a pulli (்) on Tamil99?
Press F after the consonant: H F gives க். You often do not need it, because a doubled consonant (க்க) and the soft and hard pairs (ங்க, ஞ்ச, ண்ட, ந்த, ம்ப, ன்ற) get the pulli automatically. Check the resulting word in the editor before copying it.
How do I type ஃ, ஸ, ஜ or ஸ்ரீ in Tamil99?
They are on Shift: Shift F is ஃ, Shift Q ஸ, Shift W ஷ, Shift E ஜ, Shift R ஹ, Shift T ஸ்ரீ and Shift Y க்ஷ. The chart above shows the Shift letter in the top corner of each key.
Why did typing the same letter three times give க்கக?
That is rule 5 of the standard. After the keyboard adds a pulli by itself, it skips the automatic pulli for one key, so three க keys give க்கக and four give க்கக்க. To keep two letters apart without a pulli (கக), press A (அ) between them.
Is Tamil99 better than the typewriter layout or phonetic typing?
It depends on what you already know. Tamil99 has fewer keystrokes per word than the typewriter layout and needs no English spelling, so it suits people learning to touch type Tamil from scratch. If you trained on a typewriter, keep that layout. If you write Tanglish already, phonetic typing needs no practice at all.
Does Tamil99 work on a phone?
On this page, yes: tap the keys in the chart. On a phone the chart shows one hand at a time so the keys stay large. Shift works for one key, then turns itself off. Use the hand selector to reach the other half of the chart, then tap the next key.
Why does Tamil99 join two consonants when I want them separate?
Tamil99 applies automatic pulli rules, so consecutive consonants can join even without pressing the pulli key. To keep two identical consonants separate on this tool, insert A between their keys. Practise that sequence in a short word first. The chart shows key positions, while the text box shows the result after the joining rules run.
How do I insert an English name while using Tamil99 here?
Select English above the editor before typing the name, then select Tamil to resume Tamil99. With the editor focused, Ctrl + G also switches the input mode. Keep your operating system on English throughout. The page remembers its own input choice, so check the selected button if you return and see English letters.
Does pasting a paragraph into this Tamil99 keyboard convert it?
No. This page applies Tamil99 rules to keys you press; pasting text inserts the text you copied. Use it to compose new Unicode Tamil, rather than to decode an old font document. For existing legacy text, open the Tamil Unicode converter and choose its actual source encoding. Keep a copy of the original paragraph for comparison.
