How to

Translate Tamil You Typed, in Three Steps

  1. Get the Tamil Into the Box

Paste Tamil script from WhatsApp, a document or a website. If you typed it in English letters, like enga irukkeenga?, press Convert to Tamil script to get எங்க இருக்கீங்க?

  2. Check the Tamil Words

Conversion from English letters is a best guess: ந, ண and ன are all n. A wrong letter can change the meaning, so read it through before translating.

  3. Read the English

In Chrome on a computer, the English appears beside the Tamil, translated on your device. Elsewhere, the phrasebook answers everyday phrases, and our server or Google Translate can do the rest. Then check the words in the table below.

Why it is hard

How Tamil Sentences Are Built

Knowing three things about Tamil makes machine translations easier to read and to fix.

The Verb Comes Last

நான் பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன் is “I to school am going”. English puts the verb in the middle, so a translator has to reorder every sentence. Long Tamil sentences with several verbs are where this goes wrong.

One Tamil Word Can Be a Whole English Sentence

Tamil adds endings to a root word instead of using separate words. வருகிறேன் is “I am coming”. படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன் is “I am in the middle of studying”. என்னால் வர முடியவில்லை is “I could not come”. Because the ending already says who, Tamil often drops “I” or “you”, and the translator has to put it back.

Respect Is in the Grammar

அவன், அவள் and அவர் all become “he” or “she” in English, but the last one is respectful. நீ and நீங்கள் both become “you”. English loses that layer, so a polite Tamil message can read flat in translation. That is normal, not a mistake in the original.

Questions People Ask

How do I translate Tamil typing to English?

Paste Tamil script into the input and use the available on-device or server translation option. The phrasebook can answer its listed written and spoken expressions without generating a new sentence. For wording outside that list, choose a machine translation route and read the output before copying, checking names, numbers and whether the sentence is a question.

Can I translate Tamil written in English letters to English meaning?

Convert the Roman Tamil into Tamil script first when the input offers Convert to Tamil script. Check the resulting spelling before translating, because a mistaken Tamil word changes the input meaning. The dedicated Tanglish to English page brings that workflow together when you start with a message written in English letters.

How do I get Tamil pronunciation in English letters instead of an English meaning?

Use Tamil to English transliteration when you want the sounds written in Roman letters. This translation page changes the language to English. Transliteration is useful for reading a Tamil name or lyric aloud, while translation helps you understand its meaning; choose which result you need before copying it.

Why does a short Tamil word become several English words?

Tamil can include information in word endings that English expresses with separate words. Compare the whole sentence rather than counting matching words. If the English result supplies a person or time that seems wrong, make the Tamil context clearer and translate again; a smooth-looking English sentence is still a draft to check.

Can this translate a spoken Tamil chat message?

The phrasebook recognises spoken forms that are included in its entries, but it does not cover every chat spelling or regional expression. Read the matched Tamil line when it offers a nearby phrase. For a custom message, check the spelling and provide a complete sentence before choosing server translation or Google Translate.

Can I paste Tamil from an old Bamini document for translation?

Convert the legacy-encoded Tamil into Unicode first using Bamini to Unicode. Then check the converted text and paste it here. Changing the font alone does not supply the Tamil characters this translator expects. If the source is an image instead, use Tamil OCR and proofread the recognised words before translating.

How do I keep Tamil names and addresses correct in English?

Compare names, initials, door numbers and place names separately with the original. A sentence translator may turn a name into an ordinary English word or choose a spelling the person does not use. For a known name, keep the person’s preferred English spelling; the transliteration guide explains the difference from translating its meaning.

Can I translate a Tamil voice message directly here?

This input translates text and does not accept an audio recording. Use Tamil voice typing for spoken input supported by that tool, then proofread the Tamil and paste it here. For a received voice note, obtain a correct text transcript first rather than treating an uncertain transcription as the speaker’s exact words.

Does Tamil to English translation work on a phone?

Yes, through the phrasebook, the optional server route and the Google Translate link. The local model route depends on the browser and device; Chrome’s documentation lists its requirements. On a phone, paste the Tamil, read the engine label and choose the server only if you want that text sent for translation.

Can I recover a Tamil passage I translated earlier?

Open History to see saved translations for this direction on the same browser, then choose Use beside an entry to restore its input. Up to 30 translations are kept locally across the tool’s language pairs. History is not a document backup, so keep an external copy of a passage you need to retain.
