Chrome 138 or later translates Hindi to Tamil itself. The first time, you press Download and translate and it fetches the language model; after that, sentences never leave your computer.
On Our Server, Two Steps
Meta's M2M100 model reads the Hindi and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Tamil. The English step can flatten tone, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

The phrasebook below is looked up first and never sends anything. It only shows an exact answer when your sentence matches a line.
What Changes When Hindi Becomes Tamil
Your word order mostly survives: Tamil also puts the verb at the end. What disappears is grammatical gender for things. A Tamil table, bus or idea is simply neuter, and verbs only change for male or female when you talk about a person in the third person (அவன் வந்தான், he came; அவள் வந்தாள், she came). You never mark gender on yourself, so मैं जा रहा हूँ and मैं जा रही हूँ are both நான் போகிறேன்.
Hindi postpositions become endings on the word. घर में (in the house) is வீட்டில், घर को (to the house) is வீட்டுக்கு, and घर से (from the house) is வீட்டிலிருந்து. Tamil also has no ने construction: मैंने खाना खाया becomes a plain நான் சாப்பிட்டேன், with the verb agreeing with "I", not with the food.
Politeness lives in the verb ending. Where Hindi says बैठिए, Tamil says உட்காருங்கள்; the -ங்கள் ending turns any command into a request. Address strangers and elders with நீங்கள், the equivalent of आप. The informal நீ is like तुम among close friends, and using it with a stranger sounds rude.
Spoken Tamil Versus Written Tamil
Tamil has two registers that differ more than spoken and written Hindi do. The written form is what you see in newspapers, signs and this phrasebook. In conversation, people shorten it: இருக்கிறீர்கள் becomes இருக்கீங்க, and போகிறேன் becomes போறேன். You will be understood using the written form, and it is always polite.
Translation tools almost always give you the written form, which is fine for messages and forms. If someone in Chennai answers you in the spoken form, listen for the shared stem: வரேன் and வருகிறேன் both mean "I am coming".
Sounds and Letters a Hindi Speaker Should Know
The Tamil script has no separate letters for aspirated or voiced consonants. One letter, ப, covers the sounds of प, फ, ब and भ. The rule of thumb: at the start of a word it is unvoiced (பால், paal, milk), between vowels it softens (தபால், thabaal, post), and after a nasal it is voiced (அம்பு, ambu). This is why Hindi names written in Tamil can look unfamiliar.
Tamil also has sounds Hindi does not. ழ (zh) is a retroflex approximant heard in தமிழ் itself. There are three n-letters (ந, ன, ண), two r-letters (ர, ற) and two l-letters besides ழ (ல, ள). Tamil also keeps short e and short o (எ, ஒ) apart from the long ஏ and ஓ, which Devanagari does not mark in Hindi.
To type Tamil from a Hindi keyboard habit, the Windows Tamil and Tamil 99 layouts are listed in Microsoft's keyboard layout reference, and INSCRIPT users will find the same key positions they use for Devanagari. If you think in Roman letters, phonetic typing lets you write vanakkam and get வணக்கம்.
Where Tamil Is Used
Tamil was the mother tongue of 6,90,26,881 people in the 2011 Census of India, mostly in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It is also an official language of Sri Lanka and of Singapore under their constitutions, so the phrases here travel beyond India.
If you have moved to Tamil Nadu for work or study, the most useful lines are directions, prices and polite requests. Shopkeepers and auto drivers notice even a few words of Tamil, and a single வணக்கம் at the start of a conversation goes a long way.

Questions People Ask
How do you say namaste in Tamil?
வணக்கம் (vanakkam). It works at any time of day and with anyone, and you can say it with palms joined just as you would namaste. Copy the Tamil greeting from the phrasebook and keep its Roman guide beside it while practising. For a longer Hindi introduction, translate the complete sentence separately instead of assembling it from greeting fragments.
What is the Tamil for "aap kaise hain"?
எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள்? (eppadi irukkireergal?) in written Tamil. In speech you will hear எப்படி இருக்கீங்க? (eppadi irukkeenga?). The usual reply is நான் நலமாக இருக்கிறேன் or simply நல்லா இருக்கேன். Use the complete polite question from the phrasebook before trying to shorten it. The Roman guide helps you read the Tamil, while the source Hindi lets you check whether the question matches the person you intend to address.
Does Tamil have masculine and feminine words like Hindi?
Only for people and gods in the third person: அவன் (he), அவள் (she), அவர் (he or she, respectful). Objects are neuter, so you never have to learn whether a table or a bus is masculine. Compare the whole Tamil sentence rather than carrying the grammatical gender of an ordinary Hindi noun into Tamil. When several people are mentioned, keep their identity explicit so the translator can choose a suitable reference.
Why does my Hindi name look different in Tamil script?
Tamil uses one letter for several Hindi sounds and has no aspirated letters, so भरत is written பரத், and ख, ग and घ are all written with க. Grantha letters such as ஜ, ஷ, ஸ and ஹ are used for some Sanskrit and Hindi sounds. Confirm the person’s preferred Tamil spelling instead of treating a machine-produced name as authoritative. For an invitation, check initials and the full name independently of the surrounding sentence, even if the Tamil output looks fluent.
Is Hindi "kal" the same as Tamil நாளை?
Only half the time. Hindi कल means both tomorrow and yesterday. Tamil has separate words: நாளை for tomorrow and நேற்று for yesterday, so you have to pick one when you translate. Give the sentence enough context to show when the event takes place. Check the Tamil time expression against the intended date before sending a meeting message, because the isolated Hindi word is not enough to choose it.
How do I turn a polite Hindi request into Tamil?
Use the -ங்கள் verb ending: கொடுங்கள் (please give), சொல்லுங்கள் (please tell). Adding தயவுசெய்து (please) is optional and sounds formal. Keep a complete phrasebook request when addressing someone you do not know well. Changing only a pronoun or adding a politeness word does not ensure that the rest of an unfamiliar Tamil sentence has the intended tone.
Are Hindi and Tamil related languages?
Not by descent. Tamil is Dravidian and Hindi is Indo-Aryan. They share many words borrowed from Sanskrit, and a few from Portuguese such as சாவி and चाबी (key), but their grammar developed separately. For practical translation, focus on the whole expression rather than shared-looking words. Use the Hindi-to-Tamil phrasebook for a listed request, and check a new sentence separately when a machine translation changes a name or relationship.
Can I type Hindi in English letters for Hindi to Tamil translation?
Use Devanagari for the Hindi input. This page does not include a Roman-Hindi-to-Devanagari converter, and the Tamil script-conversion feature is for Tamil words only. Paste an existing Hindi sentence or enter it with your Hindi keyboard, then compare the Tamil output with a matching phrasebook entry if one is available.
How do I check a Hindi name in the Tamil result?
Ask the person for their preferred Tamil spelling and compare it separately with the translated sentence. The translator may confuse a name with a common Hindi word or choose an unfamiliar Tamil spelling. Keep initials and family names unchanged where required, and confirm the full displayed name before using it on a form.
Why can a Hindi sentence match only a nearby Tamil phrase?
The phrasebook contains a fixed set of Hindi expressions paired with Tamil. When it shows a closest match, read the Hindi phrase it actually matched before copying the Tamil. A changed person, destination or request may make the nearby phrase unsuitable; use the server or Google Translate for that complete new sentence.
