Read Tamil Aloud

  1. Paste Unicode Tamil in the text area. If you need to write it first, use the Tamil typing editor, then copy the result here.
  2. Choose a Tamil voice from the list. Start with a short passage and the default speed of 0.9×. The voice label includes the language tag and whether the browser marks it as on-device or online.
  3. Press Read aloud. Pause and Resume control the current reading. Stop ends it. Editing the text or changing settings stops playback so the spoken version does not drift from your draft.

The reading panel shows the current part of your passage. If the voice supplies word boundaries, it highlights the word being spoken. Some engines supply no boundaries, so a moving word highlight is not available for every voice. The reader splits long passages into shorter pieces rather than asking the voice to read the entire document in one request.

Add a Tamil Voice to Your Device

A missing voice is a device or browser limitation. This page cannot download voices or make an English voice pronounce Tamil correctly. After changing device settings, reopen the browser and use Check again. The picker is the final check of what this browser can actually use.

Android

Open Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output. Select Google’s speech engine, also named Speech Services by Google or Speech Recognition & Synthesis on some devices. Open its settings and choose Install voice data → Tamil, then download the offered voice data. Select Tamil as the speech language and try the device’s Play demonstration. Manufacturer menus can differ.

Windows

Open Settings → Time & language → Speech. Under Manage voices, select Add voices, choose Tamil and install it. Microsoft’s supported-voice list names the Tamil voice Valluvar. Once the download finishes, reopen the browser and check the picker. A voice usable by Windows Narrator may still be unavailable to a particular browser.

iPhone and iPad

Apple lists Tamil as supported by VoiceOver. Open Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Speech → Add New Language, choose Tamil, then select and download a voice if offered. This is a voice setup route; you do not need to enable VoiceOver to use this page. Browser exposure can differ from VoiceOver availability.

macOS

Apple’s VoiceOver language list also includes Tamil on Mac. Open VoiceOver Utility → Speech → Voices, open the voice menu and choose Manage Voices. Find Tamil and download an offered voice. Return here after reopening the browser. If Tamil still does not appear, this browser is not exposing that installed voice.

ChromeOS

Select the time → Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech → Text-to-speech voice settings. Under Speech Engines, open Settings for the available engine and look for Tamil. Google documents ChromeOS TTS and eSpeak engines, with different language coverage. Install Tamil if the engine offers it; this is not a promise that every Chromebook has a Tamil voice.

What This Reader Can and Cannot Do

This is a browser speech reader, not a translation tool. Paste Tamil script rather than English-letter Tanglish. The selected voice controls pronunciation, and names, abbreviations or mixed Tamil and English may sound different between engines. Listen to a short sample before using it to proofread a long passage. Speech output should not be treated as a pronunciation authority.

There is no MP3, WAV or other audio export. The Web Speech API provides playback controls and events, but speech synthesis does not provide this page with the generated audio bytes or a recordable output stream. A download button would imply a capability this tool does not have.

Your text stays in the current page and is not saved as a draft. On-device voices are marked using information reported by the browser. Online voices may use their provider’s servers, so check the label before reading private material. If speech fails, try a shorter passage, a different listed voice or a browser that exposes your device’s Tamil voice.

Questions People Ask

Why is there no Tamil voice on my browser?

The reader can use only Tamil voices returned by your browser. Installing a device voice does not guarantee the browser exposes it. Follow the setup steps, reopen your browser and select Check again. A different browser on the same device may return a different list.

Can I download Tamil speech as MP3 or WAV?

No. The browser’s speechSynthesis API plays speech but does not return an audio file or audio stream for this page to save. Use a speech service with explicit audio export if you need a downloadable recording. Keep your original text separately, because this reader is a playback tool rather than an audio-file editor.

Does this support Sri Lankan or Singapore Tamil?

The picker includes every Tamil voice the browser provides, including ta-IN, ta-LK and ta-SG when present. This page cannot install a missing regional voice or change a voice’s accent. Select a listed voice and try a short sentence before reading a long passage. The available choices can vary between browsers on the same device.

Why does word highlighting sometimes not appear?

Some voices do not report word boundary events. When events are available, the current word is highlighted. Otherwise the reading panel shows the current sentence or passage without inventing word timings. You can still listen to the passage without a moving word marker. Use Stop to end the reading rather than waiting for highlighting to begin.

Is the text sent to a server?

This site does not upload or save your text. The picker labels voices as on-device or online using the browser’s localService flag. An online voice may send text to the browser’s voice provider. Choose an on-device voice for sensitive text.

Why does Pause behave differently on my phone?

Pause and Resume call the browser’s speech controls. Voice engines differ in how they handle these requests. If Resume does not continue, press Stop and then Read aloud to restart. Changes to text, speed, pitch or voice stop the current reading.

How can I slow the Tamil reader down for a learner?

Lower Speed before selecting Read aloud, then try a short passage. If speech is already playing, changing Speed stops it so you can restart with the new setting. Pitch is a separate control; changing it does not supply a different speaker or teach the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word.

Can I paste a whole Tamil article into the reader?

Yes. The reader splits pasted text into smaller passages and reads them in sequence, with the current part shown in its status. Start with a short sample to check your selected voice. If reading fails, press Stop and retry a shorter passage or another available voice rather than assuming the entire article was spoken.

Why is Read aloud disabled even though the page has loaded?

Read aloud needs both non-empty text and an available Tamil voice. Paste some Tamil, check the voice picker and select Check again if the list is empty. A loaded page alone cannot supply a missing voice. Follow the setup instructions above before retrying, and check the status message for the current problem.

Will the speech reader keep my article after I close the tab?

This reader does not save your pasted article as a draft. Keep the source document or a text copy before closing the page. Leaving the page also stops the current reading. For writing that you want to return to, keep a draft in the Tamil editor and paste a copy here when needed.
