Tamil Word Counter
தமிழ் சொல் எண்ணி
Count Tamil words, letters, visible characters and sentences as you type. Every number is explained, because வணக்கம் is 5 Tamil letters, 5 visible characters and 7 UTF-16 units at the same time.

What the numbers mean
Five Ways to Count the Same Tamil Text
There is no single “character count” for Tamil. A written letter may be one code point, two code points, or a consonant plus a vowel sign that a font draws as one shape. Each count below answers a different question, and the counter shows them together so you can pick the one your task needs.
| Text | Tamil letters | Visible characters | Code points | UTF-16 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| வணக்கம் | 5 | 5 | 7 | 7 |
| தமிழ் | 3 | 3 | 5 | 5 |
| அம்மா | 3 | 3 | 5 | 5 |
| ஸ்ரீ | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 |
| க்ஷ | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| 👨👩👧👦 | 0 | 1 | 7 | 11 |
The last row is not Tamil, but it shows why the units matter. The family emoji is one visible character, seven code points joined by invisible joiners, and eleven UTF-16 units. Tamil rarely uses joiners in ordinary words, but the same gap between what you see and what is stored appears in கா (2 code points, 1 visible character) and ஸ்ரீ (4 code points, 2 letters).
Words
A word here is a group of Tamil or Latin letters, or digits, separated by whitespace. Punctuation stays with the word it touches, as in வணக்கம்,. This matches what Google Docs, Microsoft Word and most word counters do. It is a writing aid, not a grammar parser: Tamil compounds and case endings can make a linguistically “correct” word count differ.
Tamil Letters
The letter count follows written Tamil. Independent vowels (உயிர்) count once. A bare consonant or a consonant with a pulli (மெய்) counts once. A consonant with a vowel sign (உயிர்மெய்) counts once. ஃ is the aytham. Grantha letters such asஜ, ஶ, ஷ, ஸ and ஹ are counted in their own row because the traditional 247-letter alphabet does not include them.
This is why வணக்கம் is 5: வ, ண,க், க, ம். The pulli is not a separate letter; it changes the consonant before it.
Visible Characters and Code Points
A visible character is a Unicode grapheme cluster, the smallest unit a reader sees as one shape. The counter uses the browser’s Intl.Segmenter for this. A code point is the underlying Unicode number. Tamil letters in the main block use one code point each; a vowel sign adds a second. UTF-16 units are what JavaScript and many messaging apps count. Tamil letters outside the basic multilingual plane are rare, so most Tamil letters use one UTF-16 unit, while an emoji uses two.
Sentences and Paragraphs
Sentences end at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. A heading or a line with no punctuation still counts as one sentence, because it carries words.
Reading Time
Reading time assumes a calm 180 Tamil words per minute. It is a rough estimate for checking whether a message or article is the right length, not a promise about how long a particular reader will take.
Messages and posts
Tamil Text Limits for SMS and X
Messaging limits are not letter counts. SMS counts UTF-16 units once a message leaves the GSM character set, and any Tamil letter does that. A single Unicode SMS holds 70 units. Longer messages are split, and each segment after the first carries a small header, so only 67 units of text fit in each later segment. The counter reports both the unit count and the number of segments.
X uses a weighted count. Most Tamil characters weigh 1, emoji weigh 2, and a link counts as 23 no matter how long it is. The limit is 280 weighted units. A Tamil post can therefore be much longer than 280 visible characters if it contains no links or emoji, but the composer is the final judge.
For a formal document, use the word and letter counts. For a text message, watch the SMS line. For a social post, watch the X line. The same paragraph can pass one limit and fail another.
Questions People Ask
How many letters are in வணக்கம்?
வணக்கம் has 5 Tamil letters: வ, ண, க், க, ம். The two pulli marks belong to the consonant before them, so க் and ம் are each one letter. The same word uses 7 UTF-16 code units, which is why a simple character counter says 7.
Does one Tamil letter count as one character?
Not always. A Tamil letter can be a consonant plus a vowel sign, so it may use two code points and two UTF-16 units. கா looks like one letter but is stored as க + ா. A grapheme counter sees one visible character, a letter counter sees one Tamil letter, and a code unit counter sees two.
How do you count words in Tamil?
This tool counts whitespace-separated pieces that contain at least one letter or number. It does not split a word into grammatical parts or infer missing spaces. English words and numbers can therefore contribute to the total too. For an assignment, follow its counting instructions if they differ from the rule used here.
Why do two Tamil counters give different numbers?
They are counting different units. A phone may count UTF-16 code units (7 for வணக்கம்), a design tool may count visible graphemes (5), and a Tamil editor may count written letters (5). This page shows all three beside each other, so you can see which number you need.
How many Tamil characters fit in an SMS?
A single Unicode SMS holds 70 UTF-16 units. Tamil text uses Unicode, so a message with any Tamil letter switches to the 70-unit limit even if the rest is English. Longer messages are split into 67-unit segments. Carriers and phones can vary, so leave room before the limit if the message must arrive whole.
How does the X character limit work for Tamil?
X counts most Tamil letters as 1, emoji as 2 and links as 23, up to a weighted limit of 280. This page uses the published weighting ranges and shows an estimate. X can change its rules, so check the composer before posting something close to the limit.
Is my text uploaded or saved on a server?
No. Counting runs in your browser. The draft is kept in this browser’s local storage so it survives a closed tab, and Clear text removes it. Nothing is sent to us. Keep a separate file if you need a durable copy of your essay or notes.
Does the counter include English words and numbers in a Tamil essay?
Yes. Words are whitespace-separated pieces containing at least one letter or number, so English words and numeric entries contribute to the word total. Tamil letters have a separate count. For an essay limit, compare the word total with your instructions rather than substituting the Tamil-letter or character total.
Why do several lines count as only one paragraph?
This counter separates paragraphs at blank lines, not at every line break. Press Enter twice between paragraphs if that matches your intended structure. A poem with one line break per verse can therefore have many lines but only one counted paragraph until you add a blank separating line.
Is the reading-time estimate suitable for a Tamil speech?
Treat it as a rough length guide, not a speaking timer. The tool estimates reading time from the word total using 180 words per minute. It does not measure your voice, pauses or delivery. Rehearse the passage aloud with a timer when you need to fit an assembly speech, presentation or recording.
Can I count words from a Tamil PDF or photograph?
Paste editable text into the counter; it does not open PDFs or recognise photos itself. If the source is an image, extract the text with Tamil OCR first and correct recognition errors. Extra spaces or missing spaces in the extracted text can change the total, so review it before using the count.
