Tamil Voice Typing
குரல் வழி தமிழ் தட்டச்சு
Tamil voice to text in your browser: speak Tamil, get text you can edit and copy. No software to install. Works in Chrome on computers and Android phones, and usually in Edge.
Tap the microphone and speak in Tamil0:00
Your browser will ask to use the microphone the first time. Choose Allow.
Try saying “வணக்கம் காற்புள்ளி எப்படி இருக்கீங்க கேள்விக்குறி” and pause. You get வணக்கம், எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?
Spoken punctuation
Voice Commands for Punctuation and New Lines
Say a command as a word on its own, between phrases. The first Tamil word in each row is the standard grammar term taught in school; the others are everyday alternatives. Turn off Spoken punctuation under the microphone if you need to dictate these words as text.
| To type | Say in Tamil | Or in English | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comma | காற்புள்ளி or கமா | “comma” | , |
| Full stop | முற்றுப்புள்ளி or ஃபுல் ஸ்டாப், புல் ஸ்டாப் | “full stop”, “period” | . |
| Question mark | கேள்விக்குறி | “question mark” | ? |
| Exclamation mark | வியப்புக்குறி or ஆச்சரியக்குறி | “exclamation mark” | ! |
| New line | புதிய வரி or அடுத்த வரி | “new line”, “next line” | line break |
| New paragraph | புதிய பத்தி or அடுத்த பத்தி | “new paragraph”, “next paragraph” | blank line |
With New paragraph after a long pause turned on, a silence of about seven seconds between phrases starts a new paragraph. Recognisers vary: if a command comes out as text, say it a little more slowly, or type the mark yourself.

Where Your Voice Goes
Our other tools run entirely on your device. Voice typing is different, and you should know how. This page asks your browser to recognise your speech, and each browser does that its own way. In Chrome, your audio is sent to Google’s speech service, which turns it into text and sends the words back. Edge and Safari use their makers’ services in the same way.
This website never receives your audio or your transcript, and we do not keep any recordings. The text stays in this browser, saved as a draft until you clear it. Newer versions of Chrome can recognise some languages on the device itself; if yours can do that for Tamil, this page uses it automatically and the status line under the text box says “Recognised on this device”.
If you would rather nothing left your device, type instead: phonetic typing and the on-screen Tamil keyboard both work without sending anything anywhere.
Browser support
Which Browsers Can Do Tamil Voice Typing
| Browser | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook | Yes | Audio is processed by Google’s speech service (MDN). |
| Chrome on Android | Yes | Audio is processed by Google’s speech service. |
| Microsoft Edge on Windows and Mac | Usually | Edge has speech recognition, but Microsoft does not publish which languages it accepts there. Microsoft’s own speech service lists Tamil (India). If Tamil is refused, the page tells you. |
| Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad | Not for Tamil | Safari has speech recognition, but it uses Apple's dictation languages, and Apple’s Dictation list has no Tamil as of November 2026. Recognition usually fails or returns English. |
| Any browser on iPhone and iPad | Not for Tamil | Every iPhone browser uses Apple's speech engine, so the Safari limit applies. Use the on-screen keyboard or type in English letters instead. |
| Brave | Usually no | The feature is present but has no speech service behind it, so it stops with a connection error. |
| Firefox | No | No speech recognition yet. |
Support as of November 2026, from MDN’s browser compatibility data. Browsers change; the page checks for support when it loads and tells you if it is missing.
Android and iPhone
Tamil Voice Typing on Your Phone
On Android, you have two options. Open this page in Chrome and use the microphone above, or use the keyboard you already have: in Gboard, make Tamil the active language, tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard and speak when you see “Speak now”. Google’s Gboard help notes that talk-to-text does not work with every language and that spoken punctuation may not be available in all of them, so if Gboard gives you English or nothing, come back here. Our Tamil keyboard for Android guide shows how to add Tamil to Gboard.
On iPhone and iPad, Tamil voice typing is not possible yet. Tamil is not in any Dictation list on Apple’s feature availability page, and every iPhone browser uses Apple’s speech engine, so this page cannot help there either. Type instead: the iPhone Tamil keyboard turns English letters into Tamil as you type.

Tips for Accurate Tamil Dictation
Speak in short phrases. Say a phrase, pause for a moment, then go on. Each pause lets the browser settle on the words.
Use a headset or sit close to the microphone. A quiet room makes a bigger difference than speaking loudly.
Pick your accent. Choose Tamil (Sri Lanka), Singapore or Malaysia from the menu if that is how you speak.
Speak clearly, at a normal pace. Spoken Tamil works, but very fast or mixed Tamil-English sentences are harder to recognise. English words may come out in English letters.
Fix as you go. The text box is a normal editor. Click into it to correct a word or add punctuation while the microphone stays on; new words go wherever the cursor is.
Questions People Ask
How do I type Tamil by voice?
Tap the microphone, allow microphone access when your browser asks, and speak in Tamil. Words appear in grey while you speak and are added to the text box when you pause. Tap the microphone again to stop, then press Copy.
Why does voice typing not work in Firefox?
The page needs a speech-recognition interface and disables the microphone when one is unavailable. If your browser shows the unsupported message, try another browser or use English to Tamil typing instead. Support for the interface alone does not guarantee that a recogniser accepts your selected Tamil variant.
Is my voice recorded or stored?
This site does not receive or store a recording of your voice. The browser handles recognition and may send audio to its speech provider; do not assume dictation stays on your device. The completed transcript is saved in this browser as a draft. Stop the microphone and clear the text when finished on a shared device.
How do I add a comma or full stop by voice?
Speech recognition for Tamil returns words without punctuation, so this page listens for punctuation words. Say காற்புள்ளி for a comma, முற்றுப்புள்ளி for a full stop and கேள்விக்குறி for a question mark, as separate words. English words such as “comma” work too, if the recogniser writes them in English letters. The full list is in the commands table above. You can also type punctuation into the box while the microphone is on.
Do I need Tamil voice typing software or an app?
No separate download is required to try this page. It uses the speech-recognition service exposed by your browser and shows a message if the device is unsupported. You must allow microphone access before listening starts. If recognition is unavailable, use the Tamil editor to write the message with English letters instead.
Can I speak in English and get Tamil script?
No. Voice typing writes what you say in the language you say it. To turn English letters into Tamil script, use English to Tamil typing: type vanakkam and get வணக்கம். For the meaning of an English sentence in Tamil, follow the translation link on that typing page instead of using dictation.
How do I allow the microphone again after blocking it?
Change the microphone permission for this site in your browser’s site controls, then try the microphone button again. If the page still reports a blocked microphone, check the browser’s permission in your device settings too. Stop and restart dictation after changing access; the text box remains available for manual editing.
Why did the microphone stop by itself?
Browsers end a listening session after a long silence or a time limit. This page starts listening again automatically while the microphone button is on. If it keeps stopping, check the message under the button: it tells you what went wrong.
Can I upload a recording to get a Tamil transcript?
No. This tool accepts live microphone speech, not uploaded audio or video files. Start the microphone and speak into it, then stop and review the completed transcript. There is no file picker, timestamped transcript or speaker identification. Use the editable text box to correct names before copying your notes.
How do I choose Indian or Sri Lankan Tamil for dictation?
Choose the Tamil variant in the language selector before starting the microphone. The page passes that selection to the recogniser; it does not supply its own accent model or guarantee recognition quality. Try a short sentence, stop listening and check the result before dictating a long message in that variant.
Can I stop punctuation words turning into symbols?
Yes. Uncheck Spoken punctuation beside the microphone before dictating a passage that discusses the command words themselves. With the option off, this page does not replace those recognised words with punctuation. Stop the microphone when finished and add any commas, full stops or line breaks directly in the transcript.
