Polite or rude

How Polite Is Each Word?

Every entry carries one of four labels. Tamil marks respect in the grammar itself, so the same sentence can be warm with a friend and rude with a stranger. When you are unsure, add the polite ending ங்க (nga): seri becomes seringa, vaa becomes vaanga.

Regions are noted only where a word is clearly tied to one: Chennai's street Tamil, the far south, the Kongu belt around Coimbatore, or Sri Lanka. Everything else is heard across Tamil Nadu.

LabelWho you can say it to
PoliteAnyone, including elders, customers and strangers.
Fine with anyoneAnyone in everyday conversation.
Casual: friends onlyFriends, people your age, younger family. Too familiar for elders.
RudeAn insult, unless you are close friends joking around.

Typing Slang in Tamil Letters

Every "Type" line on this page has been run through our own typing engine, so you know exactly what to enter. Most words work as people already spell them:semma→செம்ம. A few need a nudge:

  • Doubled letters. machi reads as மாசி, so type macchi for மச்சி.
  • Capitals for the second sound of a letter. N is ண, L is ள, R is ற, and E and O are the long ஏ and ஓ: vERa leval→வேற லெவல்.
  • Suggestions. Some spellings fit two words, such as kadi (கடை, shop, or கடி, bite). The editor offers both as you type, with the more common one first; tap the one you mean, or press its number.

Background

Where Tanglish Slang Comes From

Spoken Tamil borrows freely. The University of Madras Tamil Lexicon traces pakka (perfect) and bejaar (hassle) to Urdu (Hindustani), and jaasthi (more) to Telugu. English supplies most of the rest: an English noun takes a Tamil ending (scene-u, full-a), and an English verb takes பண்ணு, "do" (call pannu, feel pannadha).

Many new words catch on through film dialogue and college talk, which is why some words here sound dated to teenagers and others are too new for their parents. This guide sticks to words in wide use today.

Questions People Ask

What does machi mean in Tamil?

மச்சி (machi) means "dude" or "buddy". It is short for மச்சான் (machan), brother-in-law, and young Tamil speakers use it for any close friend, boy or girl. It is casual: do not use it with elders or people you have just met.

What does semma mean?

செம்ம (semma, also spelt sema) means "awesome": padam semma, the film was awesome. It also works as "very" before another word: semma bore, really boring. It is casual but not rude. Read the example in its entry before copying it into your own chat.

Is "da" rude in Tamil?

Not between friends. டா (da) for a man and டி (di) for a woman are friendly tags you add when talking to someone close or younger. Said to a stranger, a customer or an elder, they sound rude. With anyone you are not close to, use the polite ending ங்க (nga) instead: seringa, vaanga.

What is Tanglish?

Tanglish is Tamil typed in English letters, often mixed with English words: machi, call pannu. Most Tamil speakers text this way because a phone keyboard is English by default. To turn a Tanglish message into Tamil script, paste it into Tanglish to Tamil.

How do I type Tamil slang in Tamil letters?

Type the Tanglish into our Tamil typing editor and it turns into Tamil as you go. Each entry on this page shows exactly what to type. A few words need a small change (machi is typed macchi) or a tap on the right suggestion, and the entry says so.

Are these words used in Sri Lanka?

Some are. Machan is very common in Sri Lanka, and words such as ஓம் (oom, yes) and கதைக்க (kathaikka, to talk) are Sri Lankan Tamil. Most of the film and college slang here, such as gethu and vera level, is from Tamil Nadu. Entries with a known region say where they are typical.

How can I hide rude words when reading this slang list with children?

Choose the option to hide rude entries before browsing. It filters words labelled rude; casual expressions still remain, so read each entry’s register and example before using it in a lesson. For everyday greetings and courteous conversation, use the Tamil phrase collection alongside the slang list.

Why does searching sema also find semma?

The filter accepts some spelling variation, including repeated Roman letters, so you do not need to know an entry’s exact Tanglish spelling. Search the word, its Tamil form or part of its meaning. If nothing matches, clear the search and browse a theme; this is a curated list rather than a dictionary of every spoken expression.

Can I listen to the slang words before using them?

Yes, when your browser provides a Tamil voice, the entry’s listening controls can read its Tamil word or example. These use synthetic speech, so they are a pronunciation aid rather than a recording of a local speaker. Read the meaning and register too; hearing a word alone does not tell you who it is appropriate to address.

Can I translate a whole slang conversation with this page?

No. The search filters the entries and examples already on the page; it does not translate a new conversation. Search an unfamiliar expression on its own and compare its example with your context. For standard conversation, try the phrase guide, and ask the sender when the tone of a message is unclear.
