Type vanakkam, then space. Turn off for English names. Paste Tamil directly. Review spelling before sharing.
Replace the bracketed details, include the class and dates, then sign. A parent may adapt the wording for a younger child.

Try it: vanakkam→வணக்கம். Type a space to finish the word.
Two Kinds of Tamil Letter: Personal and Formal
Tamil letters come in two kinds. A personal letter (உறவுமுறைக் கடிதம்) goes to family and friends, and is warm and conversational. A formal letter (அலுவல்முறைக் கடிதம்) goes to a school, an office or an officer, and follows the sender, recipient and subject layout described below. The template list has three personal letters (to parents, to a friend and a thank-you letter) and seven formal ones.
The Personal Letter Structure
- Place and date at the top: your town, then the date.
- Greeting (விளிப்பு): அன்புள்ள அம்மாவுக்கு, for a parent, அன்புள்ள நண்பனுக்கு, or அன்புள்ள தோழிக்கு, for a friend, அன்புள்ள மாமா அவர்களுக்கு, for an elder relative.
- Asking after their health (நலம் விசாரித்தல்): the classic opening is நான் இங்கு நலம். உங்கள் நலம் அறிய ஆவல்.
- Your news, in a short paragraph or two.
- Closing lines: regards to the family and a request to write back.
- Sign-off: இப்படிக்கு, then your relationship (உங்கள் அன்பு மகன், or உன் அன்புத் தோழி,) and your name.
- Envelope address (உறைமேல் முகவரி): the reader’s name and full address with the PIN code.
Match the pronoun to the reader. Parents and elders are நீங்கள், with verbs such as சொல்லுங்கள்; a close friend is நீ, with சொல் or எழுது. Keep one form all the way through the letter.
Choose the Right Formal Letter
Start with the purpose of your letter. A leave letter asks for permission to be absent. A formal letter asks an officer for a specific action. A Collector petition describes a local problem and the relief you seek. A police complaint records what happened. An RTI application asks a public authority for information or copies of records. These drafts give you a starting structure; they are not prescribed government forms.
The school and employee letters keep the request short. Add the student's name, class and section, or the employee's name and identifier in the sender field. Enter the actual dates of absence and an accurate reason in the body. Do not leave the sample reason unchanged if it does not describe your situation. Select the salutation that suits the recipient, or keep the combined respectful form.
The Tamil Letter Structure
அனுப்புநர் identifies the sender and a reply address. பெறுநர் identifies the recipient, ideally by office and designation rather than an unverified personal name. பொருள் is a brief subject line that makes the request easy to identify. பார்வை is an optional reference to an earlier letter, order or petition, with its number and date. The preview omits it when you leave the field blank.
ஐயா and அம்மையீர் are the salutation choices in these drafts. The body follows the salutation. Explain the background in chronological order, then state exactly what you request. இப்படிக்கு introduces the closing and signature. இடம் and நாள் record the place and date. These templates place them at the end; you can adapt the text to an office's requested format.
Prepare a Tamil Nadu RTI Application
Select the RTI template for a request under Section 6(1) of the Right to Information Act, 2005. The Central Information Commission explains that a request may be made in English, Hindi or the official language of the area. Ask for identifiable records: specify the department, subject, document and period. Number each item so the requested information is clear. A grievance asking someone to repair a road belongs in a petition; a request for the relevant sanction order or expenditure record can be phrased as an information request.
Address the application to the பொதுத் தகவல் அலுவலர், followed by the department, office, full postal address, district and PIN code. Confirm the PIO details in the authority's official RTI directory before sending. The placeholders are deliberate: this builder does not find the correct office or validate jurisdiction.
The State Information Commission's fee table lists a ₹10 application fee under the Tamil Nadu RTI Fees Rules, 2005. The listed payment methods are cash, postal money order, court fee stamp, demand draft and banker's cheque. Its table separately lists rules for the High Court and Legislative Assembly, so check the rules for your particular authority. A postal money order and an Indian Postal Order are different instruments; do not assume the latter is accepted everywhere. Confirm the payee and account instructions with the receiving office.
Enter payment evidence in the fee field only after paying, or describe the applicable exemption and proof. The draft does not invent a receipt or automatically assert an exemption. The official RTI guide states that applicants below the poverty line need not pay a fee and should supply proof of that status. Additional copying charges may apply: the general table lists ₹2 per A4 or A3 page. Keep copies of what you submit.
Check and Submit Your Draft
A Collector or CM petition should identify the location, relevant department, earlier representations and the specific remedy requested. The official CM channel is the Mudhalvarin Mugavari / CM Helpline portal. TNeGA's FAQ also lists 1100, email and post. Use the current portal instructions to submit and retain the acknowledgement. This site does not submit or track petitions.
For a non-emergency police complaint, describe the date, time, place, people involved and supporting material truthfully. Do not guess missing details. If emergency assistance is needed, dial 112. Before any export, replace all bracketed prompts, check names and addresses, and review the print preview. Sign the final letter where needed. Use Unicode text for ordinary sharing; choose Bamini or Vanavil only when a press requests that encoding.
This drafting aid is not legal advice. It does not determine legal rights, filing requirements, jurisdiction or the outcome of an application. Check the receiving authority's current instructions and seek qualified advice for your circumstances.
Questions People Ask
How do I write a formal letter in Tamil?
Choose the formal template closest to your purpose, then fill the sender, recipient, subject, body and signature fields. Add place and date before exporting. Keep the request specific and replace every bracketed prompt. The preview is a starting draft, so check the recipient and any instructions from the school or office receiving it.
How do I write a letter to a friend or to parents in Tamil?
Choose Personal: Letter to Parents or Personal: Letter to a Friend. These templates put place and date first, followed by a greeting, health enquiry, news and closing. Change the sample news to your own experience. Check the greeting and closing relationship together so the letter addresses the person you actually mean.
Can I make a school or employee leave letter?
Yes. Choose the student leave template for a school request or the employee template for a workplace request. Replace the sample reason, dates, recipient and signature with your own details. Read the entire body before sending, especially if you are asking for several days rather than a single day of leave.
Can I download a Tamil letter in Word or PDF?
Yes. Open More → Download .docx for a Word document, or choose Print / PDF to open your browser’s print dialog. Use its PDF destination if available and inspect the page breaks. Downloading prepares a file only; it does not email the letter or submit it to an office.
Can I use these Tamil letter formats for a school exam?
Use them to practise structure, then follow the format and instructions your teacher or question paper gives. The builder has both personal and formal letters, but it does not mark answers or guarantee exam acceptance. Replace the sample details with the question’s details and practise writing the final letter yourself.
What should I put in the subject and reference fields?
Put a short description of your request in Subject. Use Reference only when you need to identify an earlier letter, order or application, with its actual number and date. Leaving Reference empty removes that line from the draft. Keep the longer explanation and the action you want in the body.
Can I attach certificates or evidence to the letter here?
You can list enclosures in the Attachments field, but this builder does not attach or upload files. Name the documents you will actually supply, then send or hand them over with the letter through the recipient’s accepted channel. Leave the field blank when there are no enclosures to list.
What is the RTI application fee in Tamil Nadu?
The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission lists a ₹10 application fee and payment modes including cash, postal money order, court fee stamp, demand draft and banker’s cheque. Check the receiving authority’s current instructions before paying. Enter actual payment or applicable exemption details in the form; the builder does not collect a fee.
Does this submit a police complaint or government petition?
No. This page prepares wording for a draft, and you must submit it through the correct official channel yourself. Downloading or copying produces no official acknowledgement or complaint number. Check the authority, address, dates and facts before submission. For emergency help, use 112 rather than preparing a letter here.
Where do I submit a CM Special Cell petition?
Submit through the official CM Helpline / Mudhalvarin Mugavari portal after preparing your wording. Its FAQ also lists phone, email and post channels. Copy the relevant facts from your draft, follow the official submission instructions and keep the acknowledgement number. This builder cannot track the petition’s status.
Can I give an office a Bamini or Vanavil version of my letter?
Yes. Open More and choose Bamini Text or Vanavil Text when the receiving typist requests that encoding. These downloads contain text rather than a formatted Word letter. Keep a Unicode copy, tell the typist which export you chose, and check their final proof before signing or submitting it.
Will my letter draft still be here after I reload?
No. This letter builder keeps form entries in page memory and does not save them for a later visit. Copy or download the letter before reloading or closing the tab. Switching templates keeps their separate text during the current visit, while More → Reset This Form restores the selected template’s starting fields.
