தமிழ் எழுத்துகள்

Updated By TypeTamilOnline Editorial

Short answer

Tamil has 247 letters: 12 vowels (uyir), 18 consonants (mei), 216 combined letters (uyirmei, 18 × 12) and one special letter, the aytham ஃ. Grammar counts the 12 vowels and 18 consonants as the 30 primary letters; the rest are built from them. Grantha letters such as ஜ, ஷ, ஸ and ஹ write borrowed sounds and are not counted.

Sources: Tolkappiyam, Ezhuthathikaram, sutra 1 (the 30 primary letters); the Unicode Tamil code chart, U+0B80 to U+0BFF. The Web Speech API specification describes speech synthesis and available voices.

Vowel length

Kuril and Nedil: Short and Long Vowels

Tamil measures sound in maathirai (மாத்திரை), roughly the time it takes to blink. A short vowel, kuril (குறில்), lasts one maathirai. A long vowel, nedil (நெடில்), lasts two. A consonant on its own, and the aytham, last half a maathirai.

Length changes meaning, so it is worth hearing and typing correctly. On our editor a doubled vowel or a capital gives the long one: a அ, aa ஆ; o ஒ, oa ஓ.

ஐ and ஔ have no short partner. Linguists describe them as diphthongs; Tamil grammar counts them with the nedil letters, which is why there are five kuril and seven nedil.

To see every one of these letters in Tamil-Brahmi, the script of the earliest Tamil inscriptions, use our Tamil Brahmi converter.

Answer to start a score.

Consonant classes

Vallinam, Mellinam, Idaiyinam

Tamil grammar sorts the 18 consonants into three classes of six, by how hard they sound. Vallinam are the hard stops, mellinam are the six nasals, and idaiyinam sit in between.

Each hard consonant has a nasal partner, and the pair often appears together, nasal first: that is why you see ங்க, ஞ்ச, ண்ட, ந்த, ம்ப and ன்ற so often. Knowing the pairs helps you spell what you hear.

க்ங்தங்கம் thangam, gold
ச்ஞ்பஞ்சு panju, cotton
ட்ண்வண்டி vandi, cart
த்ந்பந்து pandhu, ball
ப்ம்கம்பு kambu, stick
ற்ன்கன்று kandru, calf

Idaiyinam, the medium six: ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள்

Numbers

Tamil Numerals and Symbols

Tamil has its own digits, plus signs for 10, 100 and 1000. Everyday writing now uses 0 to 9, but you still see these on clocks, old documents and invitations. Watch out: ௧ looks like க, and in some fonts ௨ looks like உ and ௮ like அ.

Old account books and letters use signs for dates and money. They are part of Unicode, so you can copy and paste them.

The digits ௧ to ௯ and the signs for 10, 100 and 1000 have been in Unicode since version 1.1; the zero ௦ was added in version 4.1 (2005), and the date and money signs in version 4.0.

Tamil Letter Flashcards

Print the letters as cut-out cards: 24 to an A4 page, each with the Tamil letter large and, if you like, its exact ISO 15919 spelling underneath, which keeps short and long vowels apart (pe, pē). Fold the English under to test yourself, or deal out one row of the uyirmei chart at a time.

How to Type Any Tamil Letter

On our Tamil typing editor you spell each letter the way it sounds: the consonant, then the vowel. kக், kiகி, keeகீ. Capitals pick the harder letters: N ண, L ள, R ற.

The editor works on whole words, so letters that never start a word (ங, ண, ன) come out right when you type the full word: avanஅவன். To pick single letters by sight instead, use the on-screen Tamil keyboard. The English to Tamil typing page shows the full key chart.

Questions People Ask

How many letters are there in Tamil?

247. There are 12 vowels (uyir), 18 consonants (mei), 216 letters that combine a consonant with a vowel (uyirmei, 18 × 12) and one special letter, the aytham ஃ. The grantha letters ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ, க்ஷ and ஸ்ரீ are used for borrowed words and are not counted in the 247.

Why do some books say Tamil has 30 letters, or 31?

Tamil grammar calls the 12 vowels and 18 consonants the primary letters (முதல் எழுத்துகள்), because every other letter is built from them. The 216 uyirmei letters and the aytham are dependent letters (சார்பு எழுத்துகள்). So "30" counts only the primary letters, and "247" counts every letter you write. You may also see "31": that adds the aytham to the 30, but grammar books count the aytham as a dependent letter.

Are ஜ, ஷ, ஸ and ஹ Tamil letters?

They are grantha letters, borrowed from the Grantha script to write sounds from Sanskrit, English and other languages, as in ஜன்னல் (window) or பஸ் (bus). They are taught in school and used every day, but they are not part of the 247. Pure Tamil spellings avoid them where a Tamil letter will do: லட்சுமி instead of லக்ஷ்மி.

What is the difference between ந, ன and ண?

All three are n sounds. ந (n) is dental, with the tongue touching the teeth, and usually starts a word. ன (ṉ) is alveolar, with the tongue on the ridge behind the teeth, and appears in the middle or at the end. ண (ṇ) is retroflex, with the tongue curled back. நான் (naan, "I") has both ந and ன; கண் (kan, "eye") ends in ண்.

What is the difference between ல, ள and ழ?

ல (l) is the ordinary l, as in பல் (pal, "tooth"). ள (ḷ) is a retroflex l, said with the tongue curled back, as in பள்ளி (palli, "school"). ழ (ḻ) is the sound special to Tamil, often written zh, as in தமிழ் (thamizh) and பழம் (pazham, "fruit"). On our editor you type them as l, L and zh.

What is the difference between ர and ற?

ர (r) is a light, single tap, as in மரம் (maram, "tree"). ற (ṟ) is a stronger, trilled r, as in ஆறு (aaru, "river" or "six"). When ற is doubled, ற்ற, it is said like ttr: காற்று (kaatru, "wind"). Type ற with a capital R.

Can I print the Tamil letters chart?

Yes. The uyirmei chart has the full 18 × 12 grid on a single A4 page, with a PDF download and a print button. Use the interactive alphabet here to inspect individual letters, then use that grid as a desk reference for repeated practice.

Which Tamil letters should a complete beginner learn first?

Start with the vowel and consonant sections rather than memorising the full combined grid at once. Tap a letter to inspect its sound and typing information, then compare a short-vowel letter with its long-vowel partner. Once the base shapes feel familiar, use the uyirmei chart to practise how those shapes combine.

What does the dot above a Tamil consonant mean?

The dot is the pulli, which removes the consonant’s inherent vowel. Compare க with க்: the first includes an a sound, while the dotted form is the consonant alone. Use the consonant section to compare dotted forms, then open the combined chart to see how vowel signs change them.

Can I hear every Tamil letter on this page?

The letter panel can offer listening when your browser exposes a Tamil speech voice. Tap a letter to open its details and check the available controls. If listening is unavailable, the written pronunciation and letter breakdown remain usable. Treat synthetic audio as a practice aid and compare difficult sounds with a speaker or teacher.
