Tamil Translation
தமிழ் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு
Tamil to and from English, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and eight more languages. It translates on your device where your browser can, and always says which engine did the work.
Translate on this device
Your browser can translate Tamil to English without sending your text anywhere. The first time, it downloads a language pack. After that it works offline.

Every Tamil Translation Pair
Each pair page adds a curated phrasebook (checked against published sources, not yet by native speakers), words the two languages share, and notes on what machine translation gets wrong.

“On your device” is what Chrome’s Translator API lists today; the tool asks your browser each time, so new languages start working without a change here. “Our server” uses open models on Cloudflare Workers AI. It cannot read Telugu yet, so Telugu to Tamil needs Google Translate.
Translation or Transliteration?
Translation changes the language: நன்றி becomes “thank you”. Transliteration keeps the Tamil words and changes only the letters: நன்றி becomes nandri. For names, song lyrics and prayers you usually want the sound, so use Tamil to English transliteration. To write Tamil by typing English letters, use the Tamil typing editor.
Getting a Better Translation
Short sentences translate best, because Tamil puts the verb last and a translator has to reorder every clause. Write names as names, not words. Check “you”: Tamil has a polite நீங்கள் and a familiar நீ, and other languages draw the line in different places. When it matters, translate the result back with Swap and see whether the meaning survived.
Questions People Ask
How do I translate Tamil to another language?
Choose the language above the output, then type or paste Tamil script. Use Download and translate if your browser offers it, or choose Translate with our server to send the text for translation. Swap reverses the direction. Check the engine label so you know whether the answer came from a model or the phrasebook.
Which Tamil translation languages can I choose here?
The picker offers English, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Odia, Sinhala, Malay and Arabic. Available engines differ by direction, as the table below shows. Select the exact target you need before typing; the tool does not identify every source language automatically or choose a regional dialect for you.
What is the difference between a phrasebook answer and a machine translation?
A phrasebook answer comes from a fixed entry, while a machine translation is generated for your input. Read any displayed matched source phrase before copying a phrasebook suggestion. If it changes your request, name or destination, use an available translation engine for the full sentence instead of accepting a nearby match.
How can I tell whether a translation stays on my device?
Read the status below the input. On-device translation and phrasebook lookup run locally; server translation sends your text after you choose that option. If you enabled the server on an earlier visit, that choice can be remembered. Press Stop sending text to turn it off, and see the privacy page for details.
Why do some Tamil translation pairs go through English?
Our server uses English between Tamil and several Indian-language targets because its IndicTrans2 model accepts English input. Other routes use M2M100 directly, and browser translation may also use an English intermediate step. The tool labels that route. Check the final sentence for names, numbers and intended meaning rather than judging only whether it reads smoothly.
Why does the server work in only one direction for Telugu?
Our server can write Telugu through its English-to-Indic model, but its source-language model cannot read Telugu. Tamil to Telugu therefore has a server route while Telugu to Tamil does not. Try available browser translation, the Telugu phrasebook, or the Google Translate link when you need the reverse direction.
How much text can the Tamil translation server accept?
The server accepts up to 1,000 characters and 20 non-empty lines per request. Split a longer passage at sentence boundaries and check each part before continuing. Requests also share a free daily allowance and have rate limits; if the tool reports a limit, the phrasebook and optional Google Translate link remain available.
Can I switch languages without losing my translation history?
Yes. The hub’s History panel lists saved translations across language pairs on this browser. Choose Use beside an entry to restore its input and language direction. History is kept on this device, with up to 30 entries; it is not an account backup or a way to move work between phones and computers.
Can I translate Tamil in English letters or in a photograph?
Turn the source into Tamil text first. For Roman Tamil, use the offered script-conversion button and check its spelling, or use Tanglish to English. For an image, extract the text with Tamil OCR and proofread it before pasting here. A recognition error becomes part of the sentence the translator receives.
How do I choose between your server and Google Translate?
Choose the server if you want this page to translate a supported pair and agree to send the text. Choose the Google link if you prefer Google’s service or this server cannot handle the direction or request. The link carries at most the first 4,800 characters of your input, so check that a longer passage is complete.
