Tamil to Marathi Translation
Marathi is the main language of Maharashtra and Mumbai, and it shares more with Tamil than its Devanagari script suggests, from shared words to a verb-final sentence.

Chrome 138 or later translates Tamil to Marathi itself. The first time, you press Download and translate and it fetches the language model; after that, sentences never leave your computer.
On Our Server, Two Steps
Meta's M2M100 model reads the Tamil and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Marathi. The English step can flatten the gender and politeness Marathi needs, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

What Marathi and Tamil Share
Marathi is Indo-Aryan, from the southern zone of the family in Glottolog's classification, while Tamil is Dravidian. Even so, the two have a few surprising things in common. Both put the verb last, both have a neuter gender alongside masculine and feminine (Hindi has only two), and Marathi keeps the retroflex ळ, the same sound as Tamil ள, in words like कमळ (lotus) and शाळा (school).
Marathi also keeps separate words for yesterday (काल) and tomorrow (उद्या), as Tamil keeps நேற்று and நாளை. Hindi uses कल for both, so a Tamil speaker who learned Hindi first should not carry that habit into Marathi.
Translation Traps
Marathi verbs mark the speaker's gender in the past tense and in many present forms: मी गेलो (I went, man) and मी गेले (I went, woman). Tamil நான் போனேன் says nothing about gender, so check the ending whenever you translate a sentence about yourself. The notes above mark every phrase where this matters.
The pronoun आपण is a classic trap. It is the most respectful "you", but it also means inclusive "we", you and I together. आपण जाऊ या means "let us go". Tamil keeps these apart as நீங்கள் and நாம், so a tool may pick the wrong one. For everyday polite speech, तुम्ही is the safe match for நீங்கள்.
Machine output can also drift towards Hindi, which shares the script and much vocabulary. A sentence that uses Hindi words such as कल or ठीक हूँ inside Marathi grammar is a sign that the tool has mixed the two.
Typing Marathi
Marathi is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, with a few differences in practice. It uses ळ often, and it reads some letters differently: the conjunct ज्ञ is said dnya in Marathi (ज्ञान, dnyaan, knowledge), not gya as in Hindi. Romanised Marathi names often show this, as in Dnyaneshwar.
Microsoft lists a Marathi keyboard layout for Windows in its keyboard layout reference. If you already type Tamil on INSCRIPT, switching is quick, because Indian INSCRIPT layouts share one arrangement for matching sounds. Remember that Marathi vowel signs, like Tamil ones, are typed after the consonant even when they are drawn before it, as in कि.
Marathi Speakers and the Tamil Community in Maharashtra
In the 2011 Census of India, 8,30,26,680 people returned Marathi as their mother tongue, 6.86 per cent of the population and the third largest group in the country. Tamil had 6,90,26,881.
The same census found that 0.45 per cent of Maharashtra's people returned Tamil as their mother tongue, which works out to roughly five lakh people. For them, and for anyone moving between the two states for work, simple polite Marathi goes a long way.

Questions People Ask
How do you say vanakkam in Marathi?
नमस्कार (namaskaar). It is the standard respectful greeting at any time of day. Use the matching greeting entry to keep the Marathi script and pronunciation guide together. For a message that goes beyond a greeting, translate the complete Tamil sentence instead of joining unrelated phrases from separate rows.
How do I say thank you in Marathi?
धन्यवाद (dhanyavaad) is standard. आभारी आहे (aabhaari aahe), "I am grateful", sounds warm and polite. Compare the phrasebook wording with the situation before copying. A short thank-you expression does not automatically translate an entire message of appreciation, especially if you have added a name or described what someone did.
Is Marathi the same as Hindi?
No. They share the Devanagari script and many Sanskrit words, but Marathi has its own grammar, a neuter gender, the letter ळ and separate words for yesterday and tomorrow. Select Marathi as the target even when you can read Hindi, and check the actual Marathi wording rather than accepting anything written in Devanagari. The target language matters independently of the script displayed by the translator.
What does आपण mean in Marathi?
It has two meanings: the most respectful "you", and inclusive "we" (you and I). Context decides. For a polite "you" in daily speech, तुम्ही is more common. When translating a sentence with this word, include the surrounding clause so the intended meaning is clearer. Do not choose a Tamil pronoun from this word alone, especially where a workplace message could mean a group.
Does Marathi have a letter like Tamil ள?
Yes, ळ. It is a retroflex l, close to Tamil ள , and appears in common words like शाळा (school) and कमळ (lotus). Hindi does not use it. Keep the full Marathi word when copying or practising the letter. The sound comparison is useful, but it does not mean all Tamil words containing the similar letter can be converted to Marathi by changing script.
How do you say "how are you" in Marathi?
तुम्ही कसे आहात? (tumhi kase aahaat?) to a man or a group, and तुम्ही कशा आहात? to a woman. The reply मी ठीक आहे works for anyone. Check who you are addressing before copying the question. Keep the phrasebook’s note beside the Marathi expression, and do not assume the Tamil source tells the translator every detail needed to choose the recipient’s form.
Can I use Hindi spelling when checking a Marathi translation from Tamil?
Check the Marathi wording itself rather than treating any Devanagari output as Hindi. This page selects Marathi as its translation target and supplies Marathi phrasebook entries. To compare the Hindi alternative, use Tamil to Hindi translation; switching between those pages changes the language requested, even where the writing system looks familiar.
Can I read Marathi translations if I know only Tamil letters?
The phrasebook supplies Roman guides beside its Marathi entries, so you can start with a listed greeting or request without reading Devanagari. Those guides do not cover every custom machine translation. Keep the Tamil meaning and the full Marathi phrase together while practising, and read the notes before changing who the sentence addresses.
How should I check Marathi names in a translated Tamil invitation?
Confirm each person’s preferred Marathi spelling before printing the invitation. Translate the Tamil message as a sentence, then compare names, initials, dates and venue details against the original. A translation engine is not a register of personal names, so a fluent-looking Marathi result still needs those details checked individually.
Why is my Marathi result labelled as translated through English?
The server route for Tamil to Marathi uses English between the two languages. That label describes the translation path, not the language you should type. Keep Tamil as the input, translate a complete short sentence, and compare the result with the phrasebook where possible before relying on it for an unfamiliar expression.
