Everyday Messages, Typed in Tanglish

These are the kind of messages people send on WhatsApp every day. The left column is what you type and the right column is what you get. For chat slang such as machi, semma and mokka, the Tamil slang guide explains what each word means and how to type it.

Check the Unsure Words

Tanglish has no fixed spelling, so a few words need a look. A dotted underline marks a word that is not in the word list, so its spelling is a best guess. Type kaalaiyil kaapi kudichchiyaa and you get காலையில் காபி குடிச்சியா, with குடிச்சியா underlined. The guess is right here, but you can't know that without looking.

Press Check above the Tamil box. It opens the first underlined word with its other spellings. Pick one, or keep the guess, and it moves straight to the next. On a keyboard, ↑ ↓ choose, Enter keeps the highlighted spelling, → skips and Esc stops.

When a Real Word Is the Wrong Word

Some spellings make two real words. puli gives புலி (tiger), but you may have meant புளி (tamarind). Tap the word and pick. Next time you type it, your choice comes first. Or spell the harder letter yourself: puLi gives புளி straight away. Use L for ள, N for ண and R for ற inside a word.

Common Tanglish Spellings and the Tamil You Get

Tamil has three l sounds, three n sounds and two r sounds, and English letters only have one of each. Use these spellings when you want a particular letter.

n at the start, n inside. A plain n at the start of a word gives ந; inside a word it gives ன. You only need a capital N for ண.

Double the letter for a double sound. amma, akkaa and illai all need two letters. Tamil writes the doubled sound with two consonants, and the tool does the same.

Lowercase is fine for common words. palli already gives பள்ளி and panam gives பணம், because the tool knows those words. Capitals help with rarer words, names and words it underlines.

Good to know

Tanglish to Tamil Translation, or a Change of Script?

Tanglish is Tamil written in English letters. This tool rewrites those letters in Tamil script: saappittiyaa becomes சாப்பிட்டியா. The words stay the same, so the meaning stays the same. That is transliteration.

It does not translate. If you type an English sentence such as did you eat, you'll get English sounds spelled in Tamil letters, not a Tamil sentence. Type the Tamil words the way you say them instead.

English words mixed into a message are handled in two ways. Common ones, like office and late, come out the way Tamil writes them: ஆபீஸ், லேட். Rarer ones are converted letter by letter and may look odd. Tap the word and choose the last option in the list to keep the original English letters. Links, e-mail addresses and @names are always left exactly as you typed them.

If you'd rather see each word turn into Tamil as you type, with suggestions under the cursor, use the Tamil typing editor. To go the other way, from Tamil script to English letters, use Tamil to English transliteration.

Questions People Ask

How do I convert Tanglish to Tamil?

Type or paste your Tanglish text into the left box. The Tamil version appears on the right while you type. If a word comes out wrong, tap it and choose another spelling, then press Copy. Check names before sharing the result.

Is this Tanglish to Tamil translation?

No. It changes the letters, not the language. romba nanri becomes ரொம்ப நன்றி, which is the same words in Tamil script. Common English words such as office come out the way Tamil writes them (ஆபீஸ்), but a whole English sentence will not become Tamil. To read the meaning in English instead, use Tanglish to English translation.

Why are some Tamil words underlined?

A dotted underline means the word is not in our word list, so the spelling is a best guess. Tap it to see other spellings, or press Check to go through every underlined word in turn. Words without an underline are words the tool recognises.

How do I type ழ, ள, ண and ற in Tanglish?

Use zh for ழ and capitals for the others: L for ள, N for ண, R for ற. paLLi gives பள்ளி and paNam gives பணம். For common words, lowercase usually works too, because the tool knows the usual spelling. Review the completed word in its sentence.

Can I paste the Tamil into WhatsApp?

Yes. Select Copy in the Tamil output panel, then paste the result into your message. Review underlined words before copying, especially names and words with similar sounds. Copy takes the current converted text, so changes you make to the Tanglish afterwards require you to copy the revised version again.

Can I convert a long text, with links and emoji?

Yes. Paste a whole chat or a page of notes. Line breaks, punctuation, numbers and emoji are kept, and links, e-mail addresses and @names stay in English letters. Turn on Line by line to see each Tamil line under the Tanglish you typed.

Does it remember the spellings I choose?

Yes. When you pick a spelling, it moves up the list next time. That memory, and your text, stay in this browser. Nothing is sent to a server. That is a preference for suggestions rather than an account dictionary. Your choices do not automatically appear on another phone or in another browser.

How do I keep a name in English in the converted message?

Tap the converted word and choose the option that keeps its original English letters. Do this for a name or abbreviation that you do not want written in Tamil script. Review the whole message after making changes, then use Copy to take the corrected Tamil output rather than the original Tanglish.

Can I edit the Tamil output directly?

Use the word picker here for alternative spellings, or copy the result into the Tamil editor for free editing. This converter keeps the pasted Tanglish as its source, so changing that source recalculates the output. Keep a copy of a reviewed version before replacing the source with a different message.

How can I save both Tanglish and Tamil for a lesson?

Open the output menu and choose Copy both, line by line. Each source line is paired with its converted line, which is useful for comparing a short message with a learner. Check uncertain words first. Use Download .txt when you want the converted output as a plain text file instead.
