What Happens to Your Tamil Text

  1. On Our Server, Two Steps

Meta's M2M100 model reads the Tamil and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Punjabi. The English step can flatten the gender and politeness Punjabi needs, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

Punjabi and Tamil Side by Side

Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language of the north-west, classed in Glottolog's north-western zone, and Tamil is Dravidian, so the two share no common root. They meet through Sanskrit loanwords, a few Portuguese ones such as ਚਾਬੀ and சாவி (key), and the same subject, object, verb order: நான் தண்ணீர் குடிக்கிறேன் is ਮੈਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ.

Punjabi is one of the few Indian languages with tone. The same letters can carry a rising or falling pitch that changes the meaning, and the letters ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਧ and ਭ, which look like aspirated consonants, mostly signal tone instead. Tamil has no tone at all, so listen to Punjabi speakers rather than reading the letters literally.

Like Hindi, Punjabi marks gender on verbs, including for "I": a man says ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ and a woman says ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ. Respect is built in with ਜੀ, added after a name, a kinship word or even ਹਾਂ (yes) to make it polite.

Where Translation Goes Wrong

Tamil நான் gives no gender, so tools fall back on the masculine. If you are a woman, check that verbs end in ਦੀ, ਈ or ਗੀ where the notes above say so. The polite "you" is ਤੁਸੀਂ, matching Tamil நீங்கள்; the informal ਤੂੰ is for close friends and family only.

ਕੱਲ੍ਹ means both yesterday and tomorrow, and only the tense of the verb tells them apart. When you translate Tamil நேற்று or நாளை, make sure the Punjabi verb is in the past or future to match.

Greetings do not map neatly either. வணக்கம் is often translated as ਨਮਸਤੇ, which is understood, but ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ is the greeting most Punjabi speakers in India use, and the warmest welcome is ਜੀ ਆਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ.

Typing Gurmukhi

Gurmukhi works like the Tamil script in one important way: it doubles consonants with a mark rather than a stacked letter. Tamil writes a doubled sound with a புள்ளி on the first letter (பத்து); Gurmukhi puts an addak (ੱ) before the consonant to double it (ਸੱਤ, seven). Nasal sounds use the tippi (ੰ) or bindi (ਂ).

Most consonant clusters are written as plain letters in sequence, but three letters, ਰ, ਹ and ਵ, have subscript forms, as in ਪ੍ਰਿਆ (Priya). Microsoft lists a Punjabi keyboard layout for Windows in its keyboard layout reference, laid out on the same INSCRIPT pattern as the Tamil one.

Where Punjabi Is Spoken

The 2011 Census of India counted 3,31,24,726 people with Punjabi as their mother tongue, 2.74 per cent of the population, most of them in Punjab and the neighbouring states. Tamil had 6,90,26,881, about twice as many.

Punjabi is also spoken widely in Pakistan, where it is usually written in the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script rather than Gurmukhi. The phrases on this page use Gurmukhi, the standard script in Indian Punjab.

Questions People Ask

How do you say vanakkam in Punjabi?

ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (sat sri akaal) is the usual greeting. ਨਮਸਤੇ (namaste) is also understood. Read the greeting note and consider the recipient before using it in a message. Copy the Punjabi script from the phrasebook and keep its Roman guide for practice, rather than assuming every greeting suits every setting.

How do I say thank you in Punjabi?

ਧੰਨਵਾਦ (dhanvaad) or ਸ਼ੁਕਰੀਆ (shukreeaa). Both are polite and common. Keep the complete Punjabi expression beside its Roman guide while learning it. If your Tamil message explains what you are thanking someone for, translate that sentence separately rather than expecting the short greeting entry to include it.

Why does Punjabi add ਜੀ to so many words?

ਜੀ (ji) adds respect. ਹਾਂ ਜੀ is a polite yes, ਆਓ ਜੀ a polite "come in", and it follows names and kinship words, much as Tamil adds the respectful -ங்கள் ending. Read the whole Punjabi phrase and its note before copying the request. A respect marker alone does not let you rebuild the rest of a Tamil sentence word by word, so keep the listed wording together initially.

Is Punjabi a tonal language?

Yes. Punjabi has lexical tone, which most other Indian languages, including Tamil, do not. The tone is often written with letters that look like aspirated consonants, such as ਘ and ਭ. The Roman guides on this page are informal reading aids rather than a full notation of every pronunciation detail. Use them to start practising a listed phrase, but do not treat matching Latin spellings as proof of identical pronunciation.

Is Gurmukhi the same as Devanagari?

No, but they are related and work the same way, with consonants carrying an inherent vowel and signs for other vowels. Gurmukhi has its own letter shapes and the addak (ੱ) for doubled consonants. Use the Gurmukhi script printed in the phrasebook when copying a Punjabi entry. Its Roman guide is for reading practice, and switching the font of a Devanagari sentence will not turn that sentence into Gurmukhi.

Does Tamil to Punjabi here produce Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi?

This page’s Punjabi phrasebook and server target use Gurmukhi. If your reader needs Shahmukhi, do not assume this output is the right script or try to fix it by changing its font. Confirm the reader’s required writing system first, then use a service that explicitly offers that Punjabi script.

Can Punjabi written in English letters be pasted back for checking?

The Roman Punjabi lines here are reading guides for phrasebook entries, not a Punjabi typing converter. This page expects Tamil input. For a reverse check using another translator, keep the actual Gurmukhi wording together rather than substituting its informal Roman spelling, which can leave sounds and word boundaries uncertain.

How can a Tamil speaker practise a Punjabi shop conversation here?

Start with the Shopping category and compare one listed Tamil sentence with its Punjabi wording and Roman guide. Read any note before copying the phrase. For a question containing a particular price or item, translate the complete new Tamil sentence and verify that the item and amount remain in the result.

Why does Tamil to Punjabi translation sometimes mention English?

Our server reads the Tamil into English before producing Punjabi in Gurmukhi. You should still enter Tamil, not translate it into English yourself first. Review the final Punjabi expression for the intended person and situation; the phrasebook is useful for comparison when it contains the same everyday request.

How do I check a Tamil name before sending it in Punjabi?

Ask the person for their preferred Gurmukhi spelling and compare it with the translated message. Names may need their sound preserved rather than their ordinary word meaning translated. Check initials and family names separately too, particularly on a school form or invitation where a plausible spelling may still be the wrong one.
