Malayalam to Tamil Translation

If you speak Malayalam you already know half the Tamil words you need. The other half of the job is grammar: Tamil verbs carry endings that Malayalam dropped long ago.

How it translates

What Happens to Your Malayalam Text

Nothing leaves your device unless you press a button that says so. How we handle text.

  1. On Our Server, Two Steps

Meta's M2M100 model reads the Malayalam and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Tamil. The English step can flatten tone, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

  2. 116 Phrases on Your Device

The phrasebook below is looked up first and never sends anything. It only shows an exact answer when your sentence matches a line.

Adding the Endings Malayalam Dropped

In Malayalam, ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു and അവർ പോകുന്നു use the same verb. Tamil adds a person ending every time: நான் போகிறேன், நீங்கள் போகிறீர்கள், அவர்கள் போகிறார்கள். The ending agrees with the subject in person, number and, for he and she, gender. Getting this right is the single biggest step from Malayalam to correct Tamil.

Once you have the ending, you can often drop the pronoun, because the verb already says who it is. வருகிறேன் alone means "I am coming". Malayalam needs ഞാൻ വരുന്നു to say the same.

Tamil polite requests end in -ங்கள்: வாருங்கள் (please come), உட்காருங்கள் (please sit). They play the role of Malayalam വരൂ and ഇരിക്കൂ, and they are safe with anyone.

Words That Look the Same but Are Not

Your Malayalam instincts will mislead you on a few common words. In Tamil, வெள்ளம் is a flood, not water; ask for தண்ணீர். அவசரம் means hurry, not opportunity; a Tamil opportunity is வாய்ப்பு. And அம்பலம் is not a temple; a Tamil temple is கோயில்.

Tamil also prefers native words where Malayalam uses Sanskrit. Happiness is மகிழ்ச்சி in formal Tamil (சந்தோஷம் is spoken), and a hospital is மருத்துவமனை. Using the Tamil word, not the Malayalam one written in Tamil letters, makes your Tamil sound natural.

Reading and Typing the Tamil Script

The Tamil script is smaller than Malayalam. There are 12 vowels, 18 consonants and the special letter ஃ, plus a handful of Grantha letters (ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ) for loanwords. One letter covers what Malayalam writes with four: க is used for ക, ഖ, ഗ and ഘ, and its sound depends on where it sits in the word.

Tamil does not stack consonants. Every vowel-less consonant shows a dot on top, the புள்ளி: க்க, ன்ற, ட்ட. If you are used to Malayalam ligatures, Tamil words look longer but are easier to read letter by letter. Tamil has no chillu letters either; ன் plays the role of ൻ and ள் the role of ൾ.

On Windows, the Tamil, Tamil 99 and Tamil Anjal layouts appear in Microsoft's keyboard layout reference. If you already type Malayalam on INSCRIPT, the Tamil INSCRIPT keys sit in the same places.

Spoken Tamil You Will Hear

Written Tamil and spoken Tamil differ more than the two forms of Malayalam do. On the street, இருக்கிறது becomes இருக்கு, போகிறேன் becomes போறேன், and எங்கே becomes எங்க. The phrases on this page are in the written form, which everyone understands and which is right for messages, forms and signs.

In the 2011 Census of India, Tamil had 6,90,26,881 mother-tongue speakers, mostly in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and it is an official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore. In the districts along the Kerala border, many people use both languages every day.

Words Malayalam and Tamil share, and the false friends that look alike but mean different things, are listed on the Tamil to Malayalam page.

Questions People Ask

How do you say "sukhamaano" in Tamil?

நலமா ? (nalamaa?) is the closest short form. The fuller polite question is எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள் ? (eppadi irukkireergal?), and the reply is நான் நலமாக இருக்கிறேன் . Use the full Tamil question from the phrasebook when practising, and keep the Roman guide beside it. If you want a casual family greeting, confirm the recipient’s usual wording instead of shortening a formal sentence yourself.

What is the Tamil word for vellam (water)?

தண்ணீர் (thanneer), or நீர் (neer) in formal writing. Do not say வெள்ளம் in Tamil: it means a flood. This difference matters in a request for drinking water. Check the full Tamil result rather than accepting a similar-looking sound, and compare the relevant food or travel phrasebook entry before copying the sentence.

Why do Tamil verbs have so many endings?

Tamil verbs agree with their subject: போகிறேன் (I go), போகிறாய் (you go, informal), போகிறான் (he goes), போகிறாள் (she goes). Malayalam lost these endings, which is why its verbs look simpler. Keep the subject clear when translating a Malayalam sentence into Tamil, especially if several people appear in the message. Then compare the complete Tamil verb with a similar phrasebook example instead of matching individual word shapes.

How do I write ൻ in Tamil?

Use ன் (or ண் and ந் depending on the sound and word). Tamil has no chillu letters; a consonant with a புள்ளி on top does the same job. Choose the Tamil spelling for the complete word rather than converting an isolated Malayalam letter by appearance. Copy a known Tamil word when available and confirm a person’s preferred spelling before using it in a name.

What is the Tamil for chettan and chechi?

அண்ணா for an elder brother or older man, and அக்கா for an elder sister or older woman. Both are used to address strangers politely, just like the Malayalam words. Check the relationship and the way the recipient wants to be addressed before choosing a Tamil expression. Keep the phrasebook note beside the full sentence, rather than treating a kinship label as a universal title.

Is Tamil written the same way it is spoken?

No. Written Tamil keeps full forms such as வருகிறேன் , while speech shortens them to வரேன் . For a written message, start with the written form and check that its tone suits the recipient. The tool has no spoken-style switch for every Malayalam sentence. Compare the phrasebook wording with your intended situation, and confirm an unfamiliar casual expression with the reader rather than assuming a shortened form always fits.

Can I enter Manglish for Malayalam to Tamil translation?

Enter Malayalam script for this direction rather than English-letter Malayalam. This tool does not include a Manglish input converter. Paste the Malayalam from your message or use a Malayalam keyboard, then compare the Tamil result with a phrasebook expression. The Roman guide beside a phrase is for reading, not automatic Malayalam typing.

Will copying Malayalam chillu letters into the input change their meaning?

Copying the complete Malayalam word keeps its characters available to the translator. Avoid rebuilding a chillu by taking visible pieces from another word, which can change the underlying text. If a copied message fails to match the phrasebook, read the displayed match carefully or use sentence translation rather than assuming the spelling is equivalent.

Does Malayalam to Tamil preserve a Kerala person’s name?

Check the person’s preferred Tamil spelling separately from the rest of the message. A Malayalam name can need sound-based spelling rather than translation of its ordinary meaning. For a family invitation or school record, keep the original Malayalam alongside the draft until the family has confirmed the Tamil name and initials.

Can I hear Tamil after translating a Malayalam request?

Listen appears only when your device exposes a suitable Tamil voice and there is output to read. If you cannot see it, the phrasebook’s Roman Tamil guide can still help you practise a listed request. The translation feature itself does not install voices or guarantee spoken output on every phone or browser.
