How it translates

What Happens to Your Telugu Text

Nothing leaves your device unless you press a button that says so. How we handle text.

  1. In Chrome on a Computer

Chrome 138 or later translates Telugu to Tamil itself. The first time, you press Download and translate and it fetches the language model; after that, sentences never leave your computer.

  2. Not on Our Server Yet

Neither open model on our server reads Telugu: IndicTrans2 only starts from English, and M2M100 has no Telugu. Use the phrasebook or Google Translate.

  3. 116 Phrases on Your Device

The phrasebook below is looked up first and never sends anything. It only shows an exact answer when your sentence matches a line.

Three Forms Where Telugu Has Two

Telugu uses one verb for "she" and "it" in the singular. Tamil does not. When you translate ఆమె వచ్చింది, the Tamil is அவள் வந்தாள் (or the respectful அவர் வந்தார்), never வந்தது, which would treat her as an object or an animal. This is the error native Tamil speakers notice first in translated text.

Tamil verbs also change for "I" and "you": வருகிறேன் (I come), வருகிறீர்கள் (you come, polite). Telugu does this too, so the habit carries over; only the endings differ. The Tamil polite command ending is -ங்கள், matching Telugu -ండి: வாருங்கள் for రండి, சொல்லுங்கள் for చెప్పండి.

Final Consonants and Look-Alike Words

Where Telugu adds a final vowel, Tamil usually stops on a consonant marked with a புள்ளி: పాలు is பால், పేరు is பெயர், ఊరు is ஊர். Leaving the Telugu -u on a Tamil word is a common accent marker, and in writing it is simply a spelling mistake.

Watch for false friends. Tamil அவசரம் means hurry, so "no need" is தேவையில்லை, not அவசரம் இல்லை, which means "no hurry". Tamil uses வேண்டும் for "want" or "must" where Telugu uses కావాలి, as the shopping phrases above show.

Tamil Script for Telugu Readers

Tamil has fewer letters than Telugu. There are no separate aspirated letters, so భ, బ, ఫ and ప are all written ப in Tamil, and the sound depends on position. A Telugu speaker reading Tamil should not expect a letter for every sound.

Tamil also has letters Telugu lacks or uses differently: ழ (zh), ற (a trilled r) and ன (the alveolar n). Clusters are written side by side with a புள்ளி instead of a vattu, so Tamil words look longer on the page.

On Windows, Microsoft lists Tamil, Tamil 99 and Tamil Anjal layouts. If you type Telugu on INSCRIPT, the Tamil INSCRIPT layout uses the same key positions for matching sounds.

Spoken and Written Tamil

Tamil speech shortens written forms heavily: எங்கே போகிறீர்கள்? is said எங்க போறீங்க?. Telugu has a similar gap between formal and spoken forms, but in Tamil it shows up in almost every sentence. The phrases here are written Tamil, which is right for messages and is understood everywhere.

Tamil was the mother tongue of 6,90,26,881 people in the 2011 Census of India and is also an official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore. Within Tamil Nadu, 88.37 per cent of people returned Tamil as their mother tongue and 5.87 per cent Telugu, so the two languages are often heard side by side.

Words Telugu and Tamil share, and the false friends that look alike but mean different things, are listed on the Tamil to Telugu page.

Questions People Ask

How do you say "meeru ela unnaru" in Tamil?

எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள்? (eppadi irukkireergal?). In speech: எப்படி இருக்கீங்க? The reply is நான் நலமாக இருக்கிறேன் or நல்லா இருக்கேன். Use the complete question from the phrasebook before adapting it for a particular recipient. Read the Roman Tamil guide alongside the script, and check the wording if your Telugu message is addressed to more than one person.

What is the Tamil for "naaku teliyadu" (I do not know)?

எனக்குத் தெரியாது (enakku theriyaadhu). Tamil also uses the dative "to me" here, just like Telugu నాకు. Copy the full Tamil expression when it matches your meaning. If your Telugu sentence says what you do not know, translate that whole sentence using an available engine rather than expecting the short phrase to include the missing detail.

Why is "she came" not வந்தது in Tamil?

Tamil uses வந்தது only for things and animals. A woman is வந்தாள், or வந்தார் to show respect. Telugu groups she and it in the verb, but Tamil keeps them apart. Keep the subject explicit when checking the Tamil result, especially in a message with several people. Compare a complete phrasebook example and read any note instead of copying an ending solely because it resembles the Telugu structure.

Is "kaavaali" the same as Tamil வேண்டும்?

Yes for most uses. எனக்கு இது வேண்டும் means "I want this", and எனக்கு இது வேண்டாம் means "I do not want this", like Telugu కావాలి and వద్దు. Check whether the original Telugu sentence asks for something or refuses it before copying the Tamil. If a closest phrase changes that intention, use a full sentence translation through an available engine rather than accepting the nearby entry.

How do I type Tamil if I know the Telugu keyboard?

Use the Tamil INSCRIPT layout for the same key positions, or Tamil 99 if you want the layout most Tamil typists learn. With phonetic typing you can also write in English letters, such as nandri for நன்றி. This translation input expects Telugu script; choosing Tamil as the target does not change your keyboard. Use the Tamil typing editor for writing Tamil directly and check each converted word before treating it as a finished message.

Why is your server unavailable for Telugu to Tamil?

The server model used to read non-English input does not support Telugu, so this direction has no server route. The phrasebook still provides its listed Telugu-to-Tamil expressions. If the browser offers on-device translation you can use it, or follow the Google Translate link for a sentence outside the phrasebook.

Can I paste Telugu written in English letters into this tool?

Use Telugu script for the source sentence. This page does not convert Roman Telugu into Telugu letters, and its phrasebook’s Roman guides are intended for reading. Paste the original Telugu message or type it with a Telugu keyboard before requesting Tamil, especially where a name or a long vowel needs a precise spelling.

Can I translate a Telugu family message into casual Tamil?

This tool has no switch that guarantees casual Tamil for a new Telugu sentence. Compare the phrasebook’s complete Tamil expressions and notes first, then have the intended reader check any unfamiliar family wording. Avoid joining fragments from different entries, because changing the person or relationship can also require changing the sentence.

How should I check Telugu names in a Tamil translation?

Confirm each person’s own Tamil spelling instead of relying on a sentence translator to choose it. Keep the Telugu name beside the draft while checking initials, places and dates. A name may need its sound preserved rather than its ordinary meaning translated, particularly on invitations, school notices or an address.

Why does the phrasebook show a different Telugu question from mine?

It may be offering the closest listed phrase rather than an exact translation of your Telugu sentence. Read the displayed source question before copying its Tamil answer. If the person, item or destination differs, choose available on-device translation or Google Translate for your full wording instead of using an unsuitable nearby entry.
