Type Tamil words in English letters. Space converts each word. While suggestions are open, use the arrow keys or numbers to pick, Escape keeps English. Alt plus Down arrow offers other spellings for the Tamil word at the cursor.

Turn on Tamil Input

  1. Open your document in Google Docs on a computer. (The same steps work in Google Slides.)

  2. Click File, then Language, then Tamil.

  3. An input tools menu appears in the toolbar. Click the down arrow next to it.

  4. Choose how you want to type (see below).

To turn Tamil input on or off quickly, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + K (Windows, ChromeOS) or ⌘ + Option + Shift + K (Mac). In Google Sheets there is no File > Language; Google says to set the locale in File > Spreadsheet settings instead.

Docs is one of four places where Google Tamil typing still works. That guide covers the Chrome extension and Gboard too, and what happened to the old Windows app.

In a school or work account, handwriting only works if the administrator allows additional Google services, so it may be missing there.

Tamil Voice Typing in Docs

  1. Open the document in Chrome, Edge or Safari, and make sure your microphone works.

  2. Click Tools > Voice typing. A microphone box appears.

  3. Click the microphone, speak Tamil at a normal pace, and click it again when you are done.

Google lists Tamil (India), Tamil (Sri Lanka), Tamil (Singapore) and Tamil (Malaysia) as voice typing languages. Voice commands such as “select all” work only in English, and spoken punctuation may not work in Tamil, so add commas and full stops by hand.

Google notes that the browser handles the speech-to-text, so your audio is processed by your browser’s speech service. Read the result through before you share it: voice typing often mishears names and similar-sounding words. Outside Docs, our Tamil voice typing page works the same way in Chrome and Edge.

Fonts and Sharing

Text you type this way is standard Unicode Tamil, so it shows correctly for anyone you share the document with, on any device. If the default look is too small or thin, pick a Tamil font from the font menu’s More fonts list. Our Tamil fonts page lets you compare free Unicode Tamil fonts with your own text first.

When Something Goes Wrong

There Is No Input Tools Menu

Check File > Language: Google says the menu appears when you choose a language that does not use Latin letters, such as Tamil. Make sure you are in Docs or Slides on a computer; Sheets uses the locale setting instead.

Phonetic Typing Picks the Wrong Word

Click the word you meant in the suggestion list instead of pressing space. Long or unusual words (names, English loanwords) are where every phonetic tool struggles, ours included.

An Old Document Shows English Gibberish

If someone typed it years ago with a legacy font such as Bamini, Docs shows the raw letters, for example “jkpo;”. Paste the text into the Tamil Unicode converter and paste the result back.

Questions People Ask

How do I enable Tamil typing in Google Docs?

Open the document, click File > Language and choose Tamil. An input tools menu appears in the toolbar. Click the down arrow next to it and choose the Tamil phonetic option. Type the Latin spelling of a word, inspect the offered candidates and select the intended Tamil spelling before continuing.

What is the shortcut for Tamil input in Google Docs?

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + K on Windows and ChromeOS, or ⌘ + Option + Shift + K on a Mac. It opens the input tools menu. Set the document language first, then choose the input option you need. Opening the menu alone does not translate existing text.

Why is there no Tamil option in the Tools menu?

Older guides send you to the Tools menu. In current Google Docs the language setting is under File > Language. The Tools menu has Voice typing, not the input tools. After choosing Tamil, look in the toolbar for the input tools selector and choose your preferred method there.

Can I type Tamil in the Google Docs app on my phone?

Google describes the input tools menu for Docs on a computer. On a phone, use your keyboard’s Tamil layout instead: see our Tamil keyboard for Android or iPhone Tamil keyboard guide. You can also copy a checked phrase from our editor and paste it into the document.

Can I dictate Tamil in Google Docs?

Yes. Click Tools > Voice typing in Chrome, Edge or Safari. Google lists Tamil (India), Tamil (Sri Lanka), Tamil (Singapore) and Tamil (Malaysia) among the voice typing languages. Choose the appropriate Tamil voice language in the microphone panel, then check names and punctuation after dictating.

Which font should I use for Tamil in Google Docs?

Any Unicode Tamil font works, because the text itself is standard Unicode. To change the look, open the font menu and choose More fonts. You can compare free Unicode Tamil fonts with your own text in our Tamil font tester first.

Does File > Language translate my English document into Tamil?

No. File > Language sets the document language and makes the relevant input tools available; it does not rewrite existing paragraphs. To create a translated copy, Google documents Tools > Translate document. Proofread that copy before using it for names, official correspondence or teaching, because translation and typing are different tasks.

Why does Google Docs suggest a different Tamil spelling from this editor?

Each phonetic input tool chooses its own candidates from the Latin spelling you enter. In Docs, inspect the displayed options and click the Tamil word you actually want rather than accepting the first choice automatically. If you need a particular spelling, prepare and check it in the Tamil editor before copying it into your document.

Can I download my Tamil Google Doc as a Word file or PDF?

Yes. On a computer, open File > Download and choose the file type you need, such as Microsoft Word or PDF. Open the downloaded copy to check Tamil letters, line breaks and page layout before sending it. A Word copy is useful for further editing; inspect a PDF as the version you intend to print.

Can I enter Tamil in Docs without Google’s phonetic input tool?

Yes. You can prepare your Tamil text in the Tamil typing editor, copy it, and paste it into the document. Read the pasted line before continuing, especially names and similar-looking letters. This route is useful when you are comfortable with our suggestions and want to compose a paragraph before placing it in Docs.
