How it works

Built From Your Layout, Row by Row

The first lessons are generated from the keyboard layout itself, and they start where touch typists start: the home row. On Tamil99, Typewriter and Bamini you learn it one hand at a time (the left hand on A to G, then the right hand on H to '), then both hands together with every letter and real word from our practice texts that the middle row alone can type on your layout. The next lessons add the top row, the bottom row and Shift. Because they come from the same code as the keyboard, a drill never asks for a key that does not exist.

Then come the letters every layout must handle: uyirmei (consonant plus vowel), common words, doubled consonants and the two-part vowels கொ கோ கை, sentences and a full paragraph. Pass a lesson with 90% accuracy and it is marked done.

Every finished lesson and test also counts the letters you mistype and times each letter you type. Once a letter has gone wrong at least twice, or takes you clearly longer than your usual letter, a lesson called Your weak letters appears at the end of the list. It drills up to six of those letters, each one twice and then in real words, and it changes as you improve. The counts are kept per layout, because a letter that is easy on Tamil99 can be hard on the typewriter.

Good habits

Tamil Typewriting Practice: Work Like a Typist

  • Eyes on the text, not the keys. Glance at the chart on screen if you must; it lights up the key you pressed.
  • Fingers home after every key. Feel the bumps on F and J.
  • Accuracy before speed. Repeat a lesson until it is clean, then try to beat your speed.
  • Fifteen minutes a day. Little and often builds the finger memory.

When the lessons feel easy, move on to the graded Tamil typing words and paragraphs, then time yourself with the Tamil typing test. Keep a printed layout chart beside you for the first week.

Questions People Ask

How do I practise Tamil typing for free?

Choose your layout above and start with lesson 1. Each lesson is a short line: type it, see your speed and mistakes, and repeat until you pass with 90% accuracy. Lessons unlock nothing and cost nothing; you can jump to any one.

Which layout should I learn?

If you only want to write Tamil messages, Phonetic needs almost no practice. For typewriting exams, the Typewriter layout matches the machines, and the Directorate of Technical Education now asks institutes to teach Tamil99 to new students. Choose Bamini or InScript if that is the layout you already use or need for your work.

What does "Show next key" do?

It lights up the next key on the keyboard chart (or shows the English spelling in Phonetic mode). Use it while you learn a new row, then turn it off and type from memory. Repeat the same short line without hints before moving to a harder lesson.

Can I do Tamil typewriting practice online for the GTE exam?

Yes. Choose the Typewriter layout: it follows the Tamil typewriter keyboard, so the finger movements carry over to the machine. Work through the lessons, then sit the 10-minute mock speed papers for Junior and Senior grade. For the computer-based exams that TNDTE plans from 2028, practise on Tamil99.

How long does it take to learn Tamil typing?

There is no fixed completion time. Start with one short lesson, repeat it until you can type accurately without the key hint, then move on. Use the saved accuracy and lesson results to judge progress instead of a promised number of days. Return to difficult rows before increasing the passage length.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, in this browser only: your best speed and accuracy for each lesson and layout, a chart of your recent results, and the letters you mistype or type slowest. Once a letter has gone wrong twice, or is clearly slower than the rest, a Your weak letters lesson appears at the end of the list to drill it. Nothing is uploaded. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, progress starts again.

Can I practise on a phone?

Yes. Phonetic works with your phone keyboard. For the other layouts, tap the keys on the chart under the text; it shows one hand at a time, which is also a good way to learn which hand owns each key.

Do I have to finish every lesson before moving on?

No. Every lesson is available from the list, and you can revisit earlier rows or skip to a familiar skill. A lesson is marked done when its saved accuracy reaches 90%; that is this trainer’s progress threshold. It is not an exam pass mark or a requirement for opening the next lesson.

Why are my completed lessons different after I change the layout?

Progress is recorded separately for each layout because the same Tamil letter can use different keys. Choose the layout you previously practised to see those lesson results again. If you are learning two layouts, work through their lessons separately and compare accuracy within each layout rather than expecting one shared completion list.

Can I learn the keyboard before I can read Tamil fluently?

Yes, you can start by matching the short target to the next-key hint. Keep Show next key on while learning the first row, and use the Tamil alphabet guide alongside the lesson to recognise the letters. These lessons teach typing patterns; they do not provide a complete reading course.
